Default question about wire harness

how hard is it to use a stock harness for the ls1 in a swap to an older car? any tips. I have 2000 ls1 with t56 tranny. would a harness from a 98 f body work, does it matter if the car had ABS or traction control?

There are things that have to be done to a stock harness in order for it to work in other vehicles. Companies like Speartech and http://www.lt1350.com/ can modify the stock harness.

Difficulty depends on your skills in reading schematics, so only you can answer that question.

You didn't indicate which year PCM you have available...'98 or '00. If you want to use the '98 harness, you'll want a '98 PCM. Otherwise, it's yet another pinout exercise to make it work with a '99 or newer PCM.

By asking how hard is it, what i really wanted to know is. what things do you have to change on the harness and or pcm to get it to work? I know you cant use a 98 pcm with a 99+ harness with out doing the pins. thanks

This goes back to the 'reading schematics' point. You haven't said what car you're considering swapping the LS1 into, so nobody will have a clue what mods are needed on that end.

Electrically, you just need 12VDC, ground, and starter solenoid trigger wire. Mechanically, you need 58psi of fuel to the rail hookup, a working cooling system, and air filtration. With these, you can start and run the engine.

After that, there are gauge outputs, fan controls, and other things you can find by using the Search button up top.

It took me about a week of working evenings to strip out all the uncessary wires, identify all the grounds, ignition +12V and always on +12V using a pinout list I got from this site and a a schematic from Mitchell's on Demand from the public library. I'd done this same thing before - once on a Nissan Maxima motor, a Northstar and a Rover, so I had some basic experience.

I am a ****-poor automotive electrician, but I was too cheap to buy a completed modified harness. The factory harness looks intimidating, but it isn't that hard if you are methodical and use the pinout/schematics

Buying a VATS sim from Baker Electronix would have simplified things considerably on both the Cadillac and the LS1

PS - I would look for a harness and PCM from the same year as the motor. You are asking for trouble if you don't.

The engine is going into a 73 camaro, the only thing from the factory harness thats being used is for the lights. right now everything needed to start and run the engine is on a seperate fuseblock and harness i made. The cooling system is taken care of. I actually set the car up fuel wise, for EFI last year so thats taken care of as well. thanks for the replies so far.So if i hook up the harness plug in the pcm and power it up the engine should start and run?? thats the short version of course.

If you pinned everything right, and you have 58psi of fuel pressure at the rail, you should be in business. That's the short version, of course.

You need to disable VATS either in PCM software or an external box or it won't start.

Probably have some error codes you'll want to disable, like fuel tank pressure sensor and whatnot.

Not sure how you handled your exhaust oxygen sensors, but at a minimum you need Bank 1 Sensor 1 and Bank 2 Sensor 1 installed for the PCM to run in closed-loop mode.

Not sure how you hooked up your dash gauges, watch that coolant temp! It's tough burping the air from an LS1 on initial startup.

That's all that comes to mind.
