98 PCM upgrade

I posted this in the PCm forum too as I am sure both forums have different users that could provide me with valuable information.

I am getting a complete 98 TA and am using the LS1 in my 1986 Iroc. It will have no emissions or A/C and I do not need the computer to control the transmission either. Also my guages will be totally seperate also.(Autometer setup)

My question is, is there a need to go to a newer style(99 up) PCM and get the harness switched over also? I am looking at a performance(LS1 stroker), tuning, and overall easibilty stand point. If it is switched to a 99 up, do I need a VIN number for it for tuning purposes? I will be purchasing HPTuners for the 99 SS soon, so I could get 98-99, but would like them to both use the same PCms if possibly

The 1998 are considered the bastard child of F-body VCMs. If you can, get the 1999+ harness and associated VCM. If you'd like, the 2000+ VCM are even better. As for a VIN, no you don't need one as HPTuners can still work with out it. You just need the approriate VCM Suite. Good luck!

HPtuners is upgradign everyoens service to the pro version or whatever it is. You can over ride the pcm coding and load new coding. At any rate, I am wondering if you rectify the problems the 98's have and just load 2000+ OS onto the 98 pcm. Anyoen know if you can. SOrry for the hijack.

no, you CANNOT load a 2000 OS on a 98 pcm

the 98 pcm uses a different processor, as well as differnet pinouts, ect.

its 2001 that goes to the larger ve table.

Sorry, I didnt mean load the entire OS on, just import parts of it, such as a second ve table, extended tables, things of that sort. Just wondering...

NICE!!! Good info on this post. I have searched and not found anyone that has succesfully converted from a 98 harness to a 99 plus except for Speartech(who I can not get ahold of).

Anyone know of pinouts/instructions on how to convert to a 99 up PCM. Also 99 up I can use any year PCM correct??(99 up that is) Anyone got one for sale??

if you want to run the 99+ stuff it is best to buy a harness. I asked speartech about repinning a 98 harness for the 99+ stuff and he said they have done it a few times. But everytime they do it, he swears he will never do one again. I guess it is a pain to do.
