Default Need help on purchase of LS1 engine

I'm looking to purchase a used LS1 and would like some input on what to look for. My plan is to get as much of a complete engine as possible. Including all the accessories, wiring harness, ECM as well as an attached transmission.

In looking at some of the LS1's on ebay it pretty much lists the doner vehicle, what is included and mileage.

What other questions should be asked?
What is a leak down test?
Once I recieve the engine what should I do prior to installation?

Sorry for the length of this post but I feel that alot of other guys can benefit from a post like this. In doing a search I have found alot of very knowledgeable people on this forum!!!!!

My projected project is to do a LS1 C4 vette swap. Any input here is also welcome.

Thanks in advance lead sled

You can go to e bay to find a deal on the ls1 if so look for a low mile one. you will need to have the wire harness reworked to get rid of stuff you dont need. the PCM needs to be re-programed. if you are going to be stock the A4 torque converter is ok. from the factory, some ls1s go through lots of oil. around 2003 (check years Im not sure) or so the ls1 had the ls6 block and intake. the first few year ls1s had valve covers with bolts on the outside of the cover and the newer ones had bolts in the center of the cover. keep in mind you get what you pay for. if you need parts, try Valvegod@aol,com SMC performance

There is a place in Bristol PA that specializes in salvaging F and Y body engines. I was gonna go through them whenever i do my swap. Mostly becuse its only 2 hours away and i can pick it up myself. There name is Fparts on ebay. prices vary ive seen a complete engine, harness and trans Autos & Sticks starting around $3999. i think they ckeck out the engines before they sell them too. Also they most likely dont use a car where the engine gets relocated to the passenger see because of its accident, but its always a good idea to do a compression check and a visual over the engine like that before its installed. Pretty much do a preventative maintanence check over it. Hope that helps you out.

I'm considering selling my LS1 setup if you are interested. I'm just tossing the idea around in my head now, but $$ can persuade me. I don't have time to work on the car as much as I'd like to.

your best bet is to try and find a dealer friend who will buy you a complete wreck at a salvage auction. Wrecked complete cars go for $3000-6000 depending on the year. You will have everything you need to swap, and can offset by selling the extra parts. If the car was wrecked, it obviously ran lol
