Default LS1 in a Miata???

I have wanted to do one for a while, I have found a awesome donor car. Any info would greatly be appreciated. I do not think it'd work with a 6 speed, but a 4L60E should.

I think there was one here before. Do a search and you should find it. The guy doing it did do major surgery to the bulkhead though to shift the engine back into the car.

I did the search, and found his thread, saved the pictures for reference. I wonder how far along his project is @ this point. I am not new to the conversion thing I've already done a LT1/M6 RX-7. Man I miss the **** out of that car.

hey-
my conversion of my 90 miata with a 98 ls1/t56 is almost complete. it takes a bit of work to modify the firewall to give clearance for the 6 speed bell housing. the car now starts, but i think i still have a vats issue! the car will run for 1-2 seconds, and then die... plenty of fuel pressure etc... hope to have the car on the road within a month or so... i know 2 other guys that are currently doing the swap besides myself... one has the automatic, and one has the t56 like mine... good luck!

ls1mx5 you will need to flash the computer or get a vats bypass
on the three ls1 i work on we did not have to cut the fire wall for the auto or 6 six trans

Manning- i have a vats bypass... the car has run, but it is now acting like the bypass might be no good.

what year cars did you do the swaps in? where are you located? how much did you space the k-frame down? 1 inch here. did the factory hood close? (not sure yet!) what did you do for headers? i built custom ones that exit in the wheel wells since i didnt have clearance in the tunnel. what rear end did you use? (turboII rx-7) radiator? (miata) just curious as to how others did this swap. i hope to have mine road worthy in the next couple of weeks!

i still need to decide on buying hptuners or ls1 edit...

id reccomend the HPtuners 100%

i got my HPtuners for 2002s (like my donor motor) and 99s (like alot of the guys in the local F&Ybody club)
total cost was $505.... split between 5 of us. just $101.
by doing little things like O2 deletes, fan temp, ect.. for others.... i made enough to cover half of everyones cost. so they're in about $50 now.
one guy sold his O2 sims and is in the clear..
one guy sold his hypertech, and MADE money.
im only in $20, and it was really worth it to me.. lol

it does EVERYTHING, and its easy to use... heres a screenshot of the first thing you'll probly change...

MrDude_1- it was my understanding that both hp tuners and ls1 edit limited you to tune one single vin per $500 program?!? did this change? i thought the multiuser copies cost $4000+??? thanks for the recommendation.

This is MrDude_1 on a friends machine....

LS1 edit is VIN specific... one copy, one car.

HPtuners is YEAR specific.. and you get two years ( yours and one free year) when you buy it...

for example, mine is for 02s and 99s... so i can tune my car, AND i can tune Jays car (the friend whos name im using... lol)

btw, also...

HPtuners is not just ONE program.. its THREE.

the flash tool... this gets things on and off the PCM.
the editer.. this edits the PCM files
the scan tool.... THIS is somthing LS1 edit doesnt have.... and not only does this scan tool work for your years, it works for all ODBII GM cars... (and some non GM ODBII cars....)

As far as know there are 3 of us here doing the first gen. miata conversions. I finally have had time to start back up on it. All three of us have gone different routes . I'm using a 98 vette ls1 with a ls6 block, ported stock heads, tr 224 cam/114, 6 speed, ford t-bird rear 3.27 posi, 99 camaro pcm, custom wiring harness, and still coming along with it...the other 2 have gotten there's running. I'm hoping it will be done sometime thhis year. Money and time have been the big factor. I need to up date my pics. from Nov.04

How much do you guys think a person would be realistically looking at for the swap INCUDING the price of the car, a stock LS1 used motor/tranny, and all labor/parts to make it run???

Just curious if i should abandon the idea right now.

I've always wanted to do this swap myself....hopefully one day I will get the chance.

Or how about a stroker, heads, cam, nitrous LS1.....Probably rip the car in half though
