Alternator questions...

Alternator questions... i have a full custom autometer cluster, how do i hook up the alternator to work? more specifically the charge light. can i just hook up a LED/bulb to fool it?
i did some searching in this subforum for alts or maybe it was when i was searching for instrument cluster swaps and there is some good info on people swapping to autometers with the stock wiring.

me and luke think its the exciter wire. i bought some 470 ohm resistors(speartech recommends 470-500ohm) today so ill try them. since i pulled the cluster i think that "circuit" is broken so the alt wont charge, running my battery dead quickly.
