Default 4L80e cooler plug and tranny fluid dipstick

What kind of contraption does GM us for their tranny cooler lines on a 4L80e tranny(2wd)? I took a look at it was doin the scratch my forehead thing.

While I have your attention, Shy of the Lokar rip me off set-up. What can I do for a tranny oil level dip stick and tube? Am I able to run a factory set-up and bend it so it clears my firewall or will that alter the readings?

Thanks guys!

-Matt

i dont have a 80 in my car, but i cut the dipstick tube to fit( 2 seperate pieces) and put them back together with some 3/4 heater hose with RTV inside. once the 2 tubes butt.... they aint going anywhere. just make sure you cut the stick the same length you cut the tube.
1"=1" etc...

You can unscrew the quick connect fittings and then the standard gm threaded fittings for 5/16 cooler lines will thread into the case. You can find these on 94 back pickups and anyhting gm ade prior to 94 I put a 4l 80 in my monte carlo. You can bend the dipstick wherever you need it to make it clear and not alter the readings as long as you do not kink it.

I don't see why the stock dipstick and tube wouldn't work. The cooler lines are a snap fit. I would go to the stealer and get some lines for a 6 liter/4l80 truck and then do whatever mods it takes at the radiator end.

Be careful with the rear cooler fitting on the late model 80s. That one is special and has a "snout" on the inside that dumps the cool lube into the correct spot in the center support. You'll want to re-use this piece.

Thats why I suggested using the stock lines, instead of trying to change the fittings etc.

How would I go about switching to braided lines then? I just figured I would take out the fittings and get some AN fittings to match and then get braided lines since I have a pair of aftermarket tranny coolers and an aftermarket alluminum radiator. Do you mean that there is a snout on the inside of the case, or its on the inside of the rear quick disconnect fitting that screws into the housing?

ive never taken the fittings out of an 80, but ALL OTHER GM automatic trannys have the same thread inside the transmission case.

the adapters are available at the local hose shop that makes braided lines, if you have one in your area, id check there.
good luck.

If you insist on going braided I would cut the ends off the factory lines a couple inches from the trans and then either double flare the steel line or use a compression coupler then adapt to AN for the braided line.

. good idea. it might actually work better if you left the steel line out of the tranny longer, and put the compression/AN adapter where access is easy to the tranny.
