Alternator wiring questions...

Alternator wiring questions... Okay, apparently in my readings I missed out that the alternator differs from 98-99+ Hopefully Speartech or another of the knowledgable gents on here can help me here.
Here's the first question. Wiring plug for the 98 and the 99+ on the alternator... do they use the same pin?
Second... Assuming they use the same pin (I -think- they do?), I'm sure the alternator I've got is a 99+ which means I need to power that exciter wire to get it to charge... From what I've read I need to give it 5+ volts. I can get a voltage stepper at Rad-Shack to do that, but I want to make sure I'm correct before I hook something up and have it not work.
Any other inputs? AutoZone told me it was a 98 alternator, but it doesn't charge, so I'm pretty darn sure it's a 99+, as AutoZone isn't exactly staffed by the most brilliant minds of today.
This is pretty much the last hurdle to having my conversion going (without dying constantly).

Well, I've been reading some of the threads from John at Speartech, and it looks like I just need a 500 Ohm resistor and a switched 12 volt source to run the alternator. I'll rig that for the drive home and make it pretty later.

The manual calls for a 470 ohm resistor, that is a pretty standard value. Seriously doubt radio shack would have a 500 ohm. It will draw about 26 ma so I would get a half watt resistor.
