Default Cooling Questions

I just took my '74 Camaro on its 1st trip (about 80 miles). Something that I find strange is that it won't run hot in the city but on the freeway at speed it won't run below 185, (usually 195). This to me seems odd. I have a brand new 'old school' 72 BIG BLOCK RAD. with A/C, a Ford Taurus fan (89-93), and the stock LS6 thermostat, and I have a mechanical water temp gauge taking a reading off the stock dr. side head). My question is shouldn't the car be running at around 170 on the freeway even on a warm 80 * night? My air bleeds on the front only(ls6) are tapped into my water pump housing (on the top flat section where the truck hose is connected.) My fan is manual right now and I don't run it at all (hardly at all really-even on the street on a 100* + day ) if the engine goes to 200*( at a light) I'll turn the fans on untill I move again and it goes down to 190 or so. Maybe I have a little air trapped in the system ? Any ideas would be greatly welcomed. She doesn't run hot and she doesn't cold. I only used an 1/8 th of a tank going those 80 miles, should be in the 25 mpg range or so .... gotta love these new LSx's.

Your temps that you mention seem fine to me. 180 to 200 is where the Ls1 should be.

Why do the LT1's run so cool on the freeway. My bro's 95 Z28 runs around 165 ON THE FREEWAY. True he has a 160 therm. and the SLP fan switch. I know the LS1 -6 run best at 180, maybe a cooler therm. (180) might take me down a bit I don't know. Never messed with it on my '01 SS kept it stock. With thode LS1 temp gauges they just say 200 all the time.
