The LT1 / LT4 should certainly be cheaper and easier. The fact that the LSx stuff requires a completely new front accessory drive setup beats on the budget pretty good.
Just make sure you resolve any issues with the Opti-****. I know that can be one of the weak points of the LT1 (got a '93 Z myself). No sense putting in a motor with a questionable distributor (especially as hard as that one is to get to).
