Service Engine Light on, No EGR. WHY???

Service Engine Light on, No EGR. WHY??? Any one know how to make the "service engine soon" light go out when you eliminate the EGR from the exhaust to the intake, behind the throttle body? I elimated mine and the car runs great but that light is on and I need to make it go out. I have this book that says to remove the EGR pipe from the intake and I did that but messed it up (the directions in the book were correct but the picture showing what to do was wrong). Anyway, I ended up eliminating the line from the exhaust manifold to the intake and had to disconnect the plug from that sensor thing in front of the #2 valve cover. I just blocked off the exhaust manifold part. The car runs normal with no problems and actually runs better, but it makes the light in the dash come on. Anyone know a trick to shutting it off without pulling the bulb? I would love to know. I will be installing headers soon and it would be eliminated anyway so it should be common knowledge. Please help!!!
