Default LS1 headers for your conversion

Hi all,
I am doing a LS1 conversion that I used the C5 motor and mounts. I am having problem finding aftermarket headers to fit my swap. Note: I am looking for block hugger headers. Otherwise the headers will rub my frame rails and steering rod. Thanks for any info guys.

I used S&P headers as well, but still had to put a middle joint in my steering shaft to make it clear the tubes.

S&P will sell you one header at a time (ie one block hugger, one "hot rod" header) and just tack weld them if you want to modify a tube. That's what I did. They are very accomodating and the header guy is great to work with.

Thanks for the replies guys. I got the Sanderson headers and the passenger side's collector rub my stock C5 mount. The sanderson headers are made for a special mounts made by JCI for the Zcar. After a few hours analyzing the stock C5 headers I decided to modify them. I ended up cutting sort like a cressen moon on each tube right after the flange and bend the whole thing inward. Then trial fitting them onto the car. Then I welded them back. I should have some pictures posted on my web site soon. BTW the stock C5 headers are stainless steel which I think are a lot better then aftermarket headers.

OK I got some pictures of the stock C5 headers that I modified to work in my conversion. I didn't weld it back yet. Here is the web site with the pictures:

For my 88 RX-7, I used BBK Mustang 5.0 headers. They fit pretty tight to the engine. They are 1 3/4" primarys, long tube, with a 2 1/2" ball and socket collector. I cut the head flange off and installed GMpartsdirect.com flanges on the header. I found used headers on Corral.net for $225 shipped and the flanges were $22 shipped. Just and idea. Jesse

Thanks for the info Jesse. The main point of this is what type of mounts did everyone used for your conversion? The headers depends on the mounts configurations. My conversion I used the stock C5 mounts and biscuits. I fab up a crossmember running accross the bottom of the engine to hold it. The problem with this is I just have a small openning on the passenger side for the exhaust between the mount and the starter. On the stock C5 it is very wide from frame rail to frame rail. Therefore the exhaust can run outside of the starter. So if want to use the C5 stock header I have to bend it inward.

On the driver side is the same. I am trying to avoid using a joint for my steering shaft. If I bend the header inward some and lower the motor enough it will clear my steering shaft. I will post more pictures once it's in and everything is cleared.

Some people have used the stock mustang mounts and extended the rear tab out to pick up the back bolt. There are also a couple places that sell tubular K-members with chevy mounts on them, would be tooo easy. http://www.ajeracing.com/index.htm
Did you re-work your own harness or did you have it done?
I'm getting ready to drop an LS1 into my 98 GT.

Slicknic,
I am no where with the harness yet. You can see the stock harness is on my motor :o) at this time. I have a friend with a complete C5 manuals that he will lend me when it's time to play with the harness.

When I got the motor it came with the Vettes mounts and biscuits. I just worked with what I had at the time and building the crossmember for this setup is piece of cake and that's why I have to find the right headers.

I got the stock headers moded and they clear the steering shaft . If I lower the motor enough the mount will clear the steering shaft also. However the alternator I mounted originally was too low and it sits on top of my lower steering joint. Last night I fabed up 2 brackets to move the alternator up high. I am still in the process of finallizing where the motor should sit. I want it to be low as possible and still have have enough room between the motor and the firewall just incase I have to work on the brake lines and such.. I added more pictures on my web site BTW.. Thanks for the info guys..

BTW I just got another pair of these C5 SS headers. If someone wants them let me know.

I have very little clearance on my BMW conversion, and none of the manifolds out there would fit (I didn't try the shorties). When the c6 came out, I figured I would give those manifolds a try. They fit perfectly, are light weight and look like they will flow for days. They might be worth looking into.

I have not seen the C6 manifold. Are they SS or cast iron? I have figure out my header problem though. Thanks for the response.

They are cast, but they are thin wall and very WIDE open. They are also EXTREMELY short.
