Default What damage from overheating?

I overheated my engine the other day. I had a major design flaw in my cooling system and ended up with a huge air bubble near the thermostat so no water could flow into the engine. I had already filled the block from the upper radiator hose. I currently have no water temp gauge hooked up. The fans kicked on in fast and the heater hoses got too hot to touch. The radiator hoses were still cool.

I shut it off and let it cool for a few days. I started it again today and it sputtered and surged and finally died. Now it won't even start at all. Just turns over and over and doesn't fire. There was a little smoke from the exhaust when it was turning over.

What kind of damage am I looking at for overheating? What can I check? I am hoping for something simple, but it rarely is.
thanks

Well, you can do a ton of damage if you overheat.

Everything from blowing a head gasket or cracking the head all the way down to cracking the block.

Have you looked at the plugs? Check to see if anything is cracked and dumping coolant into the motor.

I'm not an expert but that's always a pretty safe place to start.

Good luck. Hopefully someone who knows better than I will come along.

Depends on how hot you let it get.....but from the sounds of it you let it get really hot so my guess would be a spun bearring....sorry bro, good luck on the rebuild!

I'm sorry to hear about the over heating problem!

But do you know what caused the air bubble near the thermostat?

I'm very close to starting up my ls1 in a rx7,
and don't want to have the same problem?

That is really odd since the LS1 has an elaborate system to eliminate the need for burping the coolant on fill (at least according to my shop manual it does)...

Everything is fine now. I did a compression check and all was great. There was no damage and as soon as I reset the PCM, it started and ran beautifully. As you all know the waterneck points out to the side. This was pointed right at my upper control arm. I had the lower radiator hose go up and over the control arm then back down to the waterneck. When I filled the radiator, there was no way to purge the air that was trapped at the top of the hump. The block was filled from the upper hose so there was some water in there. When the thermostat opened, there was nothing to suck and the pump pumped water to and from the heater core. The heater hoses got too hot to touch and the radiator hoses were still cold. I shut it down, let it cool for a few hours, then started it up to pull it back into the garage. When it started, it was coughing and sputtering, really running rough. After the compression check and seeing there was not oil in the water and no water in the oil, I reset the PCM, and all was fine. I cut the water neck, rotated it so it points straight out, and welded it back together. Now it is a straight shot to the radiator and I have plenty of cooling. I still need to seal the fans to the radiator, though.
