Default "Stand-Alone" VS "Factory-Stock" Harness Question?

Is it totally necessary to purchase a "Stand-Alone" after-market engine harness, when performing an LS1/4L60E swap into a new vehicle? Or can the computer simply be reprogramed to delete those connections that are not used? Pro's/Con's? Anyone done this before? Thanks in advance. If you can read an electrical schematic and are handy with a soldering iron you can keep the factory harness and modify it to work. A stand alone harness will run you anywhere from $400-700. I used the factory 99 harness that came with my engine and picked up a few relays, a fuse block and some wire all for about $75. I just studied the schematics and determined where to splice in the fuses and relays. I also got rid of the EGR, AIR, A/C. It took a while to make sure I wasn't overlooking something, but I saved a ton of money.

I did the same thing for our Cobra kit car. Removed the smog/AC/etc from the harness, integrated the newly ran sensors (aftermarket coolant sensor, oil pressure sensor) into the harness as well. Soldered up the connection for hte 85mm MAF and made that look factory as well.

John at Speartech can help you out if you need it. I got the DLC wiring & plug from him, and he does custom harnesses if you need it, reprogramming etc. We're using LS1 Edit on ours to get rid of codes.

The stock harness and a handful of relays and fuses plus the wiring diagrams for the vehicles and you are of to the races. Solder your connections though, don't crimp them. I had problems with a couple of the circuits. The low voltages used by the PCM doesn't like the high resistance created by some of crimped joints.

Where is a good source for wiring diagrams? I have an LS1/4l60e out of a '99 Camaro. I'm planning to stuff it in a '72 Datsun 240z.

For me, hooking up the wiring/computer is the scariest part of the project, although I can read a schematic and use a multi-meter. <img border="0" alt="[Fluffy]" title="" src="graemlins/fluffy.gif" />

They are kind of pricey, but it will be invaluable for your install. You get every wiring diagram you could possibly want.
