Default NE1 using the LS1/T56 Painless harness?

I ordered my Painless harness back in May from Summit and still haven't received it. Actually, I just checked my order online and it says that it shipped today. Woohoo!

I was wandering for those of you who have this setup how the gauges hook up. What I mean is, does the computer use the factory sending units and then pass the signal on to your aftermarket gauges, or do you have to replace the factory sending units for the ones specifically for your gauges? My car has the AutoMeter Phantoms and one concern I've always had is how large the oil pressure sending unit is. I'd like to get away from using that if I can. Thanks for the feedback.

You will need to run new sending units for some of the autometer gauges, but not all. There are a few options for oil pressure. You can remove the old oil pressure sensor completely and replace it. The computer does not use oil pressure, just passes it on to the instrument cluster. The other option is: There is a plate that bolts just above the oil filter. For the corvettes, this is tapped M12x1.5 for oil temp. For F-bodies, this is a blank that can be tapped for your oil pressure sending unit.

For water temp, there is a plug near the #8 cylinder in the head that can be removed and replaced with an adapter M12x1.5 to 1/8 npt. Or you can just drill and tap the plug to fit your 1/8 npt water temp sensor. For the speedometer, you can run it off the speed output from the computer. Since the LS1 has 8 separate coils, you need to set up the speedometer for 4 cylinders. For the tach you can hook up to the tach output from the computer. Not sure if the autometer tachs can be calibrated. If not, you can pick up a ratio adapter from abbot enterprises. This will allow you to adjust the signal going to the tach.

What other gauges did you want to use?

That's pretty much it (tach, speedo, water temp, oil pressure). I do have a couple additional questions.

- For the oil pressure, you mentioned replacing the factory sending unit. I haven't actually seen that sender. What type is it and what would I replace it with? The Autometer oil pressure sender is very large so I'm trying to come up with other options. If I were to tap the plate above the oil filter I'm sure that the Autometer sender would hit the exhaust. Does anyone know if there another smaller sender I could use?

- For the water temp, where can you buy the adapter you mentioned (M12x1.5 to 1/8 npt)?

Thanks a bunch for the help.

So how did that painlesswiring harness work out? I'm puting an ls1 in a 64 chevy ll and I think I'm going to get that harness. My motor is out of a 98 and I have the factory computer and harness, but I don't even know where to begin with hooking the factory harness up!

Confusing isnt it. I'm putting one in a kit car right now and will be trying to figure out the harness myself. Theres lots of stuff to consider and it looks like a big task, but on the other hand it costs 350 to 450 to have your stock harness altered. If you've got the time then keep in touch and I'll keep track of mine and pass the info on. daleici@bellsouth.net

My 2c's

I used "LT1 Wiring" for my LS1 / T56 powered '87 RX7 Turbo II (That I'm now driving!!!!)

They did awesome for me. I sent my harness off, with special requests, and got it back in a total of less than 2 weeks!

My cost was under $350....

I worked out great! EVERYTHING comes back labled and ready for hookup. Dropped right in, started right up!

Their contact info:

LT1 Wiring
1106 West 20th St.
Erie, PA 16502
1-814-456-6614

Ask for "Dana Dash", but he'll likely answer anyway.

He's helped me a ton. Tell him: Mark in Huntsville, AL w/ the LS1 RX7 sent ya.

Sorry Boosted, I'm just seeing your response. I thought I had the option turned on to email me when there was a response, but I guess not.

I've got the Painless harness installed in the car now and everything is connected, except the gauges that is. The harness itself is very nice and everything is clearly labeled. One thing that I will mention is that the Painless harness has all the wiring for each of the emissions components that are installed on the factory setup. That is, every piece except the rear O2 sensors. Huh, what the F%^K???? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Mad]" src="gr_images/icons/mad.gif" />

Ok, I know not everyone wants to use the rear O2 sensors, but on the Painless harness they've removed the wiring all together. That means that you've got to remove the rear O2's from the computers programming to keep from throwing codes. Now you've gone from being able to either run rear O2's, or simms, to having to get the computer reprogrammed. What were these guys thinking???

I called and spoke to their tech guys and they said that the emissions wiring is required for states like California that don't grandfather new engines going in older cars. Ok that sounds reasonable, but they still haven't explained why they've removed the wiring for the rear O2 sensors.

Bottom line. I was going to purchase LS1edit down the road, now I've got to do it sooner than I planned just to get the car running. That's another $550 dollars to add to the project.
