Default Removed PS pump, what should I do with the belt??

What are you guys doing that aren't using the power steering pump? If I put on a shorter belt I can make it work fine for just the alt, and water pump but the belt only touches about 1/4 of the water pump pulley. I would like to get alittle more on there.

Thanks
Frank

I am removing my AC and my P/S so I can fit an LS1 into a kit car. I have moved the alternator to the high position using the stock mount and a couple of homemade brackets. The belt will have to be a custom length. I'll have the last bracket installed tomorrow and could post a pic if that would help.

Wierd - I could swear I saw 2 other posts here yesterday, the last one was someone talking about how they would "post a solution later tonight".

???

I won't have PS either, but I didn't really think it would be an issue. Curious to see some specifics.

I dont think that the short belt mod is really a problem. I had to move my alternator because it got in the way of my steering. I finished and installed the prototype brackets today and they work great. All made from 3/4 X 1" T6061 alumuminum stock, drilled and tapped. I'll post a pic tonight or tomorrow.

I know this looks a little rough but it will look better when I get the right size bolts, deburr it and round the corners up a bit then I'll hard anodize it clear. Bolted on it feels really strong with no detecable flexing, but only 6000 RPM will tell for sure.

if you are not going to run ac, or power steering, march has just released a kit, part #20101, this is an outward mount kit that looks very clean, it is in their 2003 catalog, I work for Ramchargers and have called about pricing and availability, they are about 4 weeks from production, but no prices yet, expect them to run slightly more then their regular serpentine kits, you can call phil, or dan at march for a technical printout with measurements 734-729-9070

There is a much easier way to eliminate the PS. I moved my tensioner pulley to where the smooth idler puller is and bought a slightly larger ribbed pulley from Checker and put it where the original tensioner pulley was. It was the only one they had and was less then $20. You may have to put a washer behind the one that used to be a smooth pulley. If you put a larger one there, it will hit the alternator bolt. I also counter sunk an allen head bolt where the lower alternator bolt is. The belt I used is a #550k6 Autozone $11.95, and the pulley is #89009 Checker 76mm 6 grove/w flange $16.74. There is enought contact with the water pump pulley that you cannot turn it by hand. <img src="http://members.***.net/mcb56/LS1Front.jpg" alt=" - " />

That looks pretty good and I for one really appreciate the details of your post (part numbers and everything).

I don't have a Checkers (or Kragen) in my area, but that part number works at PartsAmerica.com.

It doesn't look like the belt gets very well wrapped around the water p ump pulley, but it seems to be just about identical to the stock setup in that regard.

Thanks.
