It can be deleted out but one can also make a simple circuit that sends the correct signal to the PCM. Mine works just fine and I am running a 98 PCM with no vats delete. If I unplug it the engine will fire and die so it is no fluke . It operates on 5 volts (which is the voltage the PCM wants for input for the fuel enable signal. a 5 volt 40 - 60 HZ square wave to be exact). so you will have to tap into one of the 5 volt reference out puts on the PCM. I used the EGR one for I am not using one any way. Here is a link

It would be nice if that were a cure-all for everyone trying to get around VATS, but unfortunately that is not the case. A 50 Hz oscillator will ONLY work on an F-body based program! That circuit will do nothing on a truck based PCM or a Corvette based PCM. They use Serial data VATS not PWM VATS. On a truck or Vette, a serial data stream is generated in the BCM if all conditions were satisfied by the key, steering column, etc., and then the injectors will pulse normally. The only way around it on a conversion is to shut it off in the PCM. There is no $5 circuit available to generate the required signal.

John is correct. On engine start, the PCM sends a message to the BCM (body computer) over the "Class II" buss asking for the VIN#. If it does not recieve a VIN, or the correct VIN, within 5 seconds it shuts the fuel injectors off. The only logical way to "over ride" this in a engine conversion is to have theft shut off in the PCM software. There are other ways to do it, but this is the easiest and cheapest.

So...since my donor engine & transmission are out of a 2001 Camaro SS "F-body", and I have the factory harness and computer, I CAN fabricate my own VATS bypass? That great news! <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />

Hmmm I wasn't aware of that.... In that case I think I would look for an f-body harness and PCM. Unless someone really wanted the fly by wire throttle. Does LS1 edit work with the y-body PCM's as well??? If so that might be a good investment.

yep, no problem. here is a pic of the one i made for my 2002 ls1 from a z28. works perfect and i hooked it up with a plug so that its removable.

this was my first circuit ever and it probably shows lol, but it works. i found the schematic on here quite sometime ago, i remember there being two, a 50hz and a 60hz i think, mine is the 60hz variety. ill see if i can find the actual schematic i used, but its all based on the 555 timer chip, you can find lots of info on that and how to generate a 60hz signal, thats all you're really doing.

Unless you get a "quality built" module, I would recommend going the delete option.

There's nothing worse than being stranded by an "add-on" that burnt out.

glenn gerzik: This thread is from 2002.... Try posting in the parts wanted section. I have a couple modules. One I built just to see if that was my problem, and one that I bought to use until I got a tune. Ebay has the ones you can buy and the price is good.

You could just ask for the BCM out of the donor car and hook it up with a few resistors acting as the key. Thats what i did and it was easy. Im going to get rid of it when i get my tune though so it will clean my engine compartment up a bit.

I aggree. Your gonna have to get the PCM tunned anyway to remove codes you don't need. Why not just get VATTs turned off at the same time. Why add something else that could cause you troubles in the future,

1) you dont have to get the computer tuned to run it initially, but you do have to do something about VATS

2)VATS does have a worthwhile purpose. some like myself want to keep the anti-theft functionality. and its not really that hard to build a "good quality" one, mine is over 3 years old and I've never had any problems with it.

3)if you are worried about adding something that could cause you trouble in the future then well...isnt that the definition of a "conversion"
