Default LS1 Jeep via Donor Truck?

Giving some serious thought to this one. I've been doing research on it here (thanks guys) and other places looking into how much more expensive and time consuming it would be vs a standard SB chevy swap (jeep in sig). I currently have a SB chevy and TH400 tranny that I was going to throw in next winter, but now I'm thinking maybe 4.8 or 5.3 out of a Silverado. I might get a wrecked 99+ 4x4 with either V8, steal it the 4l60E (I would even take the NV3500 if need be) and transfer case.

The other option would be to get a 4.8L off one of the truck forum guys who is swapping to a 6.0, then mating it to my TH400 and beefed up NP231. I would then have to get wiring harnesses, computer, etc.

Now my question. Which one would you guys do? Donor vehicle, 4.8 with TH400, or stay with the original 350 SB plan? (BTW, I would have to get a fuel injection kit for the 350)

I'm still several months away, but right now I'm in the research phase. Whatcha think?

I have owned every chevy truck vintage from 72 forward. There is no comparison to the 4.8 motor I have in my 2001 truck. 270 horsepower 16-18mpg. Pulls my Camaro better than my 95 350 did. Plus the aftermarket is catching up with this motor. Very easy to add more power now?

I have to rave about the LS1 based motors as well.

Drivability, durability, power, mileage... far exceeds that of anything carbed.

TPI - most are high mileage by now, and the power & mileage fall short.

LT1 - just not a good idea for a Jeep that will see mud & moisture (optipuke).

Here's my page on my Jeep project http://www.chitownsyty.com/bg/jeepstuff/v8TJ.htm

Also, FWIW, If you are going to do a 4.8/5.3 etc, you might as well use a 4L60E, since you'd get the OD, and the 4.8/5.3 computer will control it.

As far as transfercase, most GM based ones used in the V8 applications will be too long to fit in a short wheelbase Jeep. The 241 or 242 can get a SYE on it, via JB Conversions. I am looking into that since retaining the 231 with the 4L60E will require $400-700 in adapters. Might as well spend the money on going to a stronger transfercase that won't require adapters.

4.8's and 5.3's can be found pretty cheap at salvage places, usually complete with computer and whatnot, out of totalled trucks.

Could spend a bit more on an LS1 and go with a lighter motor (aluminum block vs iron truck block).

Yeah the cost of adapters and a FI kit for the 350/400 combo I have now is not very appealling. It brings it closer in line with what a 4.8/4L60E/NP241 would cost out of donor truck.

Thanks for the thoughts and link guys. bgreen I'm looking forward to hearing about how your project moves along!

In the meantime, I'll keep reading up and gathering parts. There is a guy on JeepsUnlimited who has put an LS1 into his Jeep TJ, but he did it for racing purposes. Here are some pics:
