Default LS1 Conversion Questions

I have a few questions. Any tips, advise, and help would be appreciated. I know this is an involved project. I think since I have another vehicle to drive and a place to leave the car and work, it won't be so bad. If I get pissed, I can take a break. So I thank any responders in advance. My engine (LS1 from a 98 vette) is being shipped as we speak. Questions I have are:

I have the Y87 package. My transmission (4L60-E) with a shift kit and cooler and 3:43 limited slip rearend should work, right? I know I need an aluminum drive shaft.

What's the deal with the fuel system, fuel lines, & tank? If there is an issue with pressure, why not add an in-line pump like one used with NO2 or a supercharger.

I know I need the Subframe, steering rack, and power steering lines. Will the pump and AC compressor from the 3.8 work?

My engine is from a 98 vette. Are the mounting holes for brackets for an f-body accessories in the same location in the block. If you look at both, the A/C and P/S pump is the same location. The alternator is on top on a vette instead of the bottom.

What are most people doing about swapping the PCM and wiring harness. Are the engine harness and body harness together or separate. For example, wiring to A/C and dash/ gauge cluster. What are my options here...

Thanks

Hi teve,

I'm fitting an LS1/T56 combo into a 58 Vette. I had to get the PCM modified to suit my car as I won't have ABS brakes, airbags and a bunch of other stuff controlled by the PCM. I also bought a new wiring harness for the engine. I then bought a stainless fuel tank with an inbuilt fuel pump. The fuel tank needs to have a return line with these engines. I have added an Aeromotive fuel regulator which is vacuum operated from the intake and directs fuel back to the tank. Hope that helps.

One issue that I know of is the use of the 98 Vette PCM. John at Speartech may add to this (of course I got this information from John ).

My understanding is that the VATS on the early Vette PCM's cannot be overridden programmatically. Also, the later PCMs give you better tunability. So you may want to upgrade to a later PCM and harness.

My engine is a 98 Vette as well, but mine didn't come with the PCM, so I have to get one anyway.

As long as you reflash the PCM to a Camaro file and use the standard cable throttle body, you're ok. The problem is when using the 98 Vette PCM and trying to keep the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC). Then there are some VATS issues with that PCM.

99 and up works great with electronic throttle.
98 and up works great with cable throttle.

As far as tunability, they ALL run sweet!

But you are correct; the newer the better, especially if serious power is your goal (I think most are happy with just a great running engine).
The 2001 and up PCM's have longer MAF tables for better resolution when using large diameter (hi-flow)MAF sensors.

The 99-00 PCM has the high-flow end of the table added but not the extended lower end of the table, which can cause idle issues with large MAF sensors.

The 97-98 PCM has the smallest MAF table.

For the performance oriented, we had a good discussion on this a while back.

The cheapest probably most overall effective way to work the fuel system is by using the F-Body fuel pump with an Aeromotive adjustable fuel pressure regulator. Plumb it and adjust to 58psi.

Did you get a real deal on the Vette engine? Usually the most painless route is to use a already configured F-Body drivetrain. No fly by wire throttle and the PCM is matched to the transmission, all the accessories are in place and the F-Body unit makes the same power.
