Default Anyone have an LS1 with a 5 speed?

Im wondering if I can pick up a tko 500/600 and make an LS1 swap into my 78 camaro any cheaper than going with a t56. Anyone tried this or have any input? I figured the 5 speed would be easier and cheaper, but who knows???

What did you not like about it? I figured a 5 speed would be easier, it seems the t56 requires more modifications to fit in a 2nd gen body.

I don't know much about it. They're not too common, and by the time you put it all in, you're probably better off with the parts selection available with the t56.

It might be a NV tranny.
You can find out about it at the library I'm sure.
Sometimes they pop up on ebay too.

If it's bolting up to anything but stock, don't do it. GM only bolts it up to the 4.8L, as it is a light duty transmission with, I believe, the same internals as the S-10 5-speed. If you like, post over at the truck forum about that tranny.

Would like to learn more about the 5 speed option as well. The idea of a 6 speed is cool however, double overdrive. This concerns me as once you cross the 1:1 OD ratios, doesn't this take a lot of energy (HP) to lug your vehicle along? Is there a gear change option (aftermarket) for the 6 speeds to ditch the dbl. OD or maybe get back down closer to 1:1? I'll hit the truck forums as suggested elsewhere in this thread.

I have a Richmond 5 speed behind my LS1. Bolted right up. just like it was behind the old 350 with a mechanical clutch. It works great but I love the feel of the t56 vs. the mechanical linkage I have. I say Go with t56 if you can squeeze the money.

Good luck!

It doesn't take very much to keep the car moving down the freeway, once you get it to the established speed.
The double overdrives are very useful, especiall when the engines are of larger size like the 5.0+ gen iii's. They make more than enough torque at 1500-1800 rpm to keep the car going at steady speed on the highway.

There has been discussion on the variable gear sets for the t56 for a while. To my knowledge, no one makes them yet.
Most of the advantage with selectable gears is to make the tranny more custom to the chassis/engine/application and final drive gears than it is to specifically ditch the double OD.

As we've all said. Even though there is some additional cost (although in the long run it's probably less expensive), the best thing to do is go with the well established t56 that is readily available. You can have a brand new t56 for about $2000. What other kind of 1990s+ designed and manufactured transmission can you find for that price?

Plus, with the energy department and the economists speculating that gasoline will hit $4 a gallon by summer 06, the double OD starts to look more and more attractive.
