Anyone have an LS1 with a 5 speed?
Won't get you the double OD though.......
Any more info on this gearbox?
It might be a NV tranny.
You can find out about it at the library I'm sure.
Sometimes they pop up on ebay too.

Good luck!
The double overdrives are very useful, especiall when the engines are of larger size like the 5.0+ gen iii's. They make more than enough torque at 1500-1800 rpm to keep the car going at steady speed on the highway.
There has been discussion on the variable gear sets for the t56 for a while. To my knowledge, no one makes them yet.
Most of the advantage with selectable gears is to make the tranny more custom to the chassis/engine/application and final drive gears than it is to specifically ditch the double OD.
As we've all said. Even though there is some additional cost (although in the long run it's probably less expensive), the best thing to do is go with the well established t56 that is readily available. You can have a brand new t56 for about $2000. What other kind of 1990s+ designed and manufactured transmission can you find for that price?
Plus, with the energy department and the economists speculating that gasoline will hit $4 a gallon by summer 06, the double OD starts to look more and more attractive.
