A 4L60e is just an electronically shifted version of the TH700R4.. With the switch to the LS1 style motor, they gave the transmission a removable bellhousing, a new style input shaft and 300mm torque converter, along with a very slight change in bellhousing bolt pattern. An older TH700 will still bolt right up though, and many people have used older style transmissions with the LSx motors. You just need to get the proper torque converter to fit the pilot in the crankshaft, which are readily available.
You could always just grab a new style 4L60e and let the computer shift it, too

You can check out Advanced Adapter's kit p/n 712500A. I was also told from someone at Yank that a camaro flexplate 98-99 has converter bolt pattern that
matches 700-R4. You will also need GM spacer and bolts p/n 12563532.
This is what I needed to connect 700-R4 to LSX in 88 IROC.

But, here is the kicker being a 4x4 with a pass side drop transfer case the options you have are
1) run a 700R4 (4L60) non computer controled trans. Will bolt up to a 27 spline NP208 transfer case. If its a NP205 than just buy a adapter kit from advanced (The NP205 is far better BTW)
2) If you want a 4L60E 65E And want the computer to control it than it needs a VSS and that mounts in the transfer case. I run a NP241 out a 91 burbn' thats pass side drop. it has a VSS sensor that I changed to the late model syle. Or buy a adapter that will change the speedo NP208 to VSS out put.
I would go with a standard 700R4 and have the computer edited for it.

to add to the question if I may...when the LS engine and 4L60E are bolted to the transfer case does the angle of the engine, transmission, and the transfer case change? In other words does the transfer case remain in the same position and it just has a different engine and tranny in front of it? I am thinking of doing this to a 1992 k1500 and would like to keep cost down by using as much of my existing parts as posssible i.e. driveshafts, crossmembers etc. thanks.

You'll need new front motor mounts and stuff for the swap. Like new fuel pump harness ans such....
