Default LQ4 into a Jeep CJ

My LQ4 should be here this week. I'm putting it into my 1979 Jeep CJ5. I THINK a corvette oil pan would work with this conversion, which would be great for oil control in off camber situations. Has anyone done this and know if it would work for sure. I would like to start looking for a decently price corvette oil pan set up ASAP if it does. I'll be using Novak motor mounts, which BTW looks like a sweet way to mount the engine in any parallell framed vehicle.

Thanks

Cool... don't forget the windage tray and pickup tube with the oil pan. Not sure if the tray is different but I know the pickup tube is.

I think Street and Performance has put a GenIII into a CJ... or maybe it was a *****'s Jeep, not sure. Check them out at www.hotrodlane.cc - they have some nice project car pics.

Thanks Fastkat, that's a good site. There was another one you mentioned the other day and I could not remember what it was when I finally got a chance to look it up.. I did not get a chance to call and see if the engine arrived today... hopefully tomorrow. I did get my engine hoist put together tonight so if it is here tomorrow I can at least get it out of the back of the truck. Found a bellhousing and it should be here any day.
I'm hoping to find out if the corvette pan works. If it does and I can find one cheap, you can have the truck pan if you need it.

The site is http://www.performancetrucks.net/ - they should have that intake manifold cover you were looking for. I think you LS1tech login and password will work for that site as well, because they are run by the same people.

That website used to be part of this board, and focused on late model GM trucks. The board owners split it off, and opened it up to other makes as well. There's a link at the forum main menu. And yes, your login & password will work.

The 'Vette pan uses a specific pickup tube and windage tray. Won't work with the truck stuff, so plan on changing it.

Also note that there are 4 different 'Vette pans. Two versions of the C5 "batwing" pan (one with removeable bottom, other as 1piece casting, otherwise interchangeable) and then the C6 wetsump pan (used on LS2,no batwings, just a "normal" looking pan), and the new LS7 drysump pan (I bet its expensive). I expect that the pickup tube and tray are different between the C5's and standard C6's (but don't know that for certain). You'll need to check. I'm not sure that the C5 batwing pans would be a good choice for off-road use, too much wide flat surface to have to protect with skidplates (IMO).

got a 78 CJ at work , just installed the 3rd "quality" reman 304 in less than one year. I'll look it over tomorrow but I'm sure that there is plenty of room for a Corvette pan. I put a Corvette pan on my LQ4, and you will need the pick-up and windage tray or you can cut a window in the windage tray where the pick-up tube bolts on. My question is why? I changed pans because mine went into a Corvette and I needed the ground clearance, on a CJ that should not be a problem the deep truck pan would be much better offroad. Expecially on some of those hills you Jeep guys like to play on. Stan

I was thinking of changing it because of the additional depth of the truck pan. With the corvette pan, it should be tucked up nicely between the frame rails out of harms way from rocks. It seems to me that the truck pan will hang down even further than the AMC 401 that is in my Jeep now...seems a little exposed to trail hazards.
Let me guess...the rear main bearings were why you had to change 3 engines in the 1978 Jeep.
Thanks,

Aaron

Aaron , Took a good look at the Jeep at work today , lots of room for the Corvette oil pan as long as its a 2 wheel drive . Theres no way that the front axle driveshaft will clear the kickout on the pan . No rear main problems , first reman chewed the distributor gear off the cam and second one locked up the oil pump , I hope this one lasts longer than 1000 miles. Stan

Why not run an F-body pan. Not as deep as the trucks!
