E30 Bmw
The 88 - 91 325IS had a heavy iron block OHC I6 and it weighed 2800lbs. The 4cyl versions started at 2400lbs, though the M3 version is 2800lbs. The y handle pretty good and have independent rear suspension - the same as used in the Z3/M Roadster (320hp), so a beefy diff can be found. My dream is a 2700lb E30 with 400hp LSx/T56.
If this guy isn't lying about his weight, then my goal should be easy.

If you want light, cheap and good handling, it's tough to beat the 2nd Gen RX7. I'll have a little under 10K in mine, and it should go deep 10's on spray and DRs, and out handle 95% of the local street cars. It's a decent looking car as well, and EVERYTHING is documented.
The only downside is everybody and their brother has one nowadays.

500hp ls6 IN A pORSCHE 914!
I STUCK AN LS6 (500hp) IN A HIGHLY MODIFIED PORSCHE 914. IT IS A MID ENGINED MONSTER AND HANDLES WAY BETTER THAN A FIERO OR AN MR2 EVER COULD. IT RUNS THE 1/4 IN HIGH 10's ON STREET TIRES.

Forget it. 10 gran is not gonna be enough to do the job correctly. I don't care what people here will tell you about cost. For a lightweight car to be able to handle the torque of a V8 engine safely, takes sub-framing & suspension work. You would never have to worry about a Fiero transmission holding the power either as a transmission & a rear end swap go along with the engine. Believe it or not, the Miata's seat position can be modified to fit people over 6 feet tall. So, there's the donor car cost, engine (PCM & harness), trans, rear end & mount, wiring mod's., sub-framing, suspension, K-frame modification...minimum. Now, maybe 10 gran not including the donor car is possible.

The porsche is a pretty good idea. I hadn't even considered a 914. A 951 seems like a good candidate as well. I'm guessing renegade are the guys to talk to? As far as costs, I understand that 10 grand is optimistic but the idea is to choose a light car that is already somewhat capable of handling the power without getting crazy with the suspension mods. Judging by some of the high power porsches out there I would think a 951 could handle a pretty good deal of abuse.

I have a 1968 Datsun Roadster that will require engine trasplant in the future. The engine compartment is small. I have considered many engine's including sr20det ,but most will require modification /cutting the frame If I'm going to that kind of extreme I'd much rather have a torquey V8 and since ls series are aluminum block I would imagine a weight difference between a iron block 4 cylinder with an associated turbo hardware and the ls would be negligible, besides I already have a turbo car in my Supra.Does anybody have dimenstions for the ls series? Iwould very much apprciate any info that you guy's could prvide.

I think the 2nd gen RX7 (FC) is the most likely candidate for you actually, MAINLY because of your cost restraints on the project.
the rear end is very stout for an IRS.
the swap is well documented.
these cars can run 9's on a stock rear end with only some bushings swapped out for poly or delrin.
as a 6 footer dude you can fit in there with a race seat and low profile mounts.
a full interior FC can weigh as little as 2500 pounds depending on your suspension and wheel choices.
setup correctly they are as nimble as a Honda S2000 but they are capable of putting down 350whp without breaking stuff.

My total cost in my MGB GT including V8 conversion, restoration and the price of the car when I got it was 11,500 I think if I did not have to restore it the cost would have been down a good bit. This was doing all the work in my garage I mean I painted it and everything to save all the money I could and it turned out great. Next is the LS1 6 speed in the MGB GT or a boosted Rover V8 that is in it with a T56 behind it.
