I have alienated folks on stangnet by throwing out the thought of an LSx engine into my '65 fastback. Much better suspension parts are being developed, and the car could be built ~2800# with some creature comforts. Ever since I bought my GTO I have fallen in love with these engines. I DID get some classic mustang guys to admit that the LSx is a lot closer to what my car came with than a modular motor!!!
Realistically I probably won't do it to this car, basically due to the underlying value of the old fastbacks...but it is fun to think about!

But with they 195 Falken tires it hooks really well even with out a LSD out back, and it is no toruble to drive it in the rain but with a LS1 something will have to be done. I'm going to work on getting a LS1 into my MGB GT after I finish my LS1 FD here or some boost for the Rover motor.

You could always do a ford focus zx3 , donors are to be had cheap and they sell a kit for a rearend and cradle for a ford motor that could be easily modified to hold a ls1.

My question is what are the good light cars (2700 or under) to use for the swaps? I know about rx7's and 240's as well as the 944 porsches but I was curious if anyone else could make a recommendation? I know a fiero could be used but I do not trust the transmissions at all. I'm lookin to build a fun unique car that will be dependable and see plenty of duty in the texas sun. Miata's are out as well as I am 6'4 and I have fitment issues. My goal is to do a fairly clean swap for 10,000 or less doing most of the work myself except for fabrication.
But lightweight to me means 700-1200kg (1540-2640lb). The Triumph TR7/8 would be a reasonable candidate for something different yet usable. As it's a pretty strong platform and well proven in compition (rally and circuit). You'd have to fab up how to mount the engine as the original mounted to a seperate subframe which I doubt would be possible with an LSx engine.
Other idea's are would be an AC Cobra replica. One of these even with a 502ci big block is easy to get below the 1000kg mark (2200lb). Plus there are some really good kits out there that use very good chassis' (race proven) with modern IRS setups.
If you want something wacky then try a Caterham like style car. This is a Dax rush:

It's sold in the UK as a complete car or as a kit and there is a variant designed for a V8. 700kg (1540lb) I would think is possible. However keeping it on the ground and not in the air may prove more of an issue.
Essentiall if you want lightweight and rwd you need to look at classic British sports cars. The Mazda MX-5 (Miata??) Is pretty decent also, but just about anything else on sale if fat and heavy, especially once you get a V8 and heavy duty gearbox and drivetrain into it.
Or as a final suggestion, maybe something old school like a 32 Ford 5 wind coupe (think American Graffiti). It would look way cool, but handling probably wouldn't be it's strong suit.

I'm new here, but I think the answers to your questions will all be found at torquecentral.com in the applicable section, FASTERthanYOU.
There's some really good threads on here about it as well and a couple searches should bring up a ton of information for ya. Sorry I can't be more help, but I'm on dial-up and searching for threads takes me a ton of time.
This thread is really giving me some good ideas, though. I'm selling my Lightning and planning on picking up a 3rd Gen RX7, Porsche, or Colorado/Canyon to put an LSx into.
I really like the idea of the RX7, they're beautiful cars, and seem to be really, really good all-around performance vehicles with a LS1. A Porsche would be unique as hell, but I'm not sure what kind've hurdles I might run into trying to do it. An AWD Colorado/Canyon could be really cool too, though.
Not enough money, haha. So many projects I want to do.

I've seen a big block Mini (proper Mini not German imposter). It was converted to rwd and you sat on the back seats
It also had a blower and a big bug catcher hood scoop like a top fueler.

If this guy isn't lying about his weight, then my goal should be easy.
