LT1 to LS1 swap ??????
#24
Ok.......maybe this will help your guys thinking. i''m NOT LOOKING TO BUILD A RACE ENGINE. I want a MOSTLY stock engine. With maybe headers, exhaust, cam but thats it. I would like a stock Ls1 for now. So i'm not going to buy a 383 with heads a nitrious. JUST WANT A STOCK LS1

Heres what I found out so far:
Transmission-you can use the lt1 automatic but you have to change the flexplate and add a spacer with longer bolts. Here are gm part numbers for those
Flexplate: 12551367
Spacer: 12563532
Bolts: 12563533
The LT1 m6 will only work if you change the bellhousing and the input shaft.
You need the LS1 k-member and use the LS1 rack and pinion...may as well use the LS1 power steering lines also.
All we need is an exact wiring solution and fuel solution. Im getting mixed answers on the fuel deal. Some say you have to run a send and return fuel rail with an external fp regulator (LS1 cars have fp regulator in the tank I believe). Others say you can use the standard fuel rail. Maybe we can get these last two questions answered.

awesome Mr. fast 337 If i find an engine it will probably come with a LS1 trans with same miles, so that will be better. As for the fuel and wiring...i'm sure some one has an idea.
If i want to do this, i mid as well buy a TOTALED car. So i 'll have all those parts....hoppefully they are destroyed too.

you're going to go through probably well over $10k worth of parts, labor, etc., etc. just to have a mostly stock engine that will last longer? Not to mention the countless hours of headacche. If your looking to remain mostly stock then just rebuild the LT1, way less money, time, headache, everything, and jsut a mild cam or not even that, just gears, longtubes, and a good intake and your almost at stock ls1 power, which is what you were going for, not to mention the engine in its form right now would last you easily another 80K miles and after the rebuild its practically brand new if its done right, i love the ls1 and all, but unless your going for serious performance then just why??

I like my setup now as well. What would it cost to have it totally rebuilt with same cam, rockers, and then slap some long tubes and exhuast on it. I love the borla but i'm always up to trying new things.
Anybody have a price. I guess i'm just feeling this thing out. I want to be up to the Ls1 performance i guess. but if i can create an LT1 thats ok on gas and can outrun an Ls1 then i would be happy. Check my sig and tell me what you guys think.
Just confused right now I guess..............

Thanks Joe, glad some one who actually did the swap would chime in, how ever your situation was very much different than most the guys on here.

I had 155K on my lt1 when I fell into a few $Ks. And also I was facing another opti replacement in 2000 miles. I'm more than happy with the way things turned out and I ended up paying a grand total of $5500. That included all labor, parts, etc. I didn't actually do most of the work. The main difference in driving between the lt1 and ls1 was that the ls1 was an all out (rpm)top end freak! Gotta love it.

First off - don't listen to everyone who says you should rebuild the LT1 or buy a LS1 car. They should use common sense and ANSWER questions about the swap instead of creating more by asking why? I did the swap and every thread that I started and searched on ended up with idiots saying why - and reasons for not but no good info. I did it becuase I was also sick of the LT1 and got a LS1 engine cheap. This is what you will need:
K-member,
rack and pinion,
intermediate shaft, - the rack and shaft depend on header choice.
ls1 engine mounts,
97-98 vette rails,
custom made a/c lines or an ENTIRE ls1 a/c setup (custom ones cost me $75 locally by welding up my LT1 and Ls1 lines,
Power steering lines off a LS1,
pcm,
wiring harness (you can splice pre - bcm LT1 and LS1 harnesses like I did but it is time consuming - make sure you know a lot about gm sensors and electronics if you do.) Otherwise a Camaro LS1 harness will still need a lot of modification to work with the dash and interior.
DO NOT BUY THE LS1 AIRBOX SETUP!! the LT1 hood will not clear it. Use a Lt1 elbow over the stock LS1 t-body and use your LT1 induction.
There is more if you did what I did and swapped in a LS1 out of a vette (vette accesories are different then f-body's. They are usable - pm me for info if you have a vette LS1 (the swap really sucks - get a camaro pull-out if you can)
For the t-56 swap - adapter plate, input shaft, bellhousing, clutch, flywheel, and hydraulics. You should also re-clearance the trans if swapping shafts and shims (one shim behind the bearing races in adapter plate.
Alldata and shbox.com will be the best wiring resources. If you have any questions just pm me. and yes the swap was worth it - people always double take the motor when popping the hood and it is so much easier to work on.

I have been thinking about doing a LS1 swap in my 93 Z28 LT1. I know the LT1 is a great but the thing is that I don't want to deal with the optispark distributor anymore on my LT1. I have had several problems with it and I keep throwing money into it just to get it running like it should be. To me, the LS1 is easier to work, especially with the coil pack ignition system, and has a lot more potential than the LT1.

OP
This swap is all up to you. If you feel its the best swap for you especially if you are motorless that Ls1 in the corner needs to be in that engine bay!
There are many that have converted and are quite happy, the merv is definately one you should talk to
