You can get one in the 20-40k mile range with a transmission for ~$3200-$3500 with everything to do the swap. You can find them for a good deal cheaper but you asked for the average.

i paid 4100 for mine with t56 & harness & everything, I was looking for quite a long time, Seems like you can get them with autos cheaper than with a t56

To top it off, it was supposed to be a bone stock engine but when I tore it down, I found Comp 918 springs, a Futral F2 cam and pushrods..The hot rod gods smiled upon me ..It was a good day.

If youre talking about just the motor, you can find them real cheap with decently low miles, if youre talking about the whole car you can find the early years for a slittle as 7500k with average miles.

98-99 F body motors will go for less becuase they are less desirable performance wise (not as good of oil return and first design heads, weaker rod bolts, weak clutch) 00 are mid range and a combo (better oil return, weak rod bolts, most had newer 241 heads, weaker rold bolts, weak clutch) 01-02 and 04 GTO had strong rod bolts, LS6 intakes, LS6 clutches, 241 heads and good oil return. they range in price from $700 for a 98 motor up to $5000 for a GTO LS1 and M6 with low miles

I got an '01 + t56 out of a RamAir with only 15K miles for $4800, including computer, wiring harness, master/slave cylinders, etc. He threw in a nice radiator, cooling fans, driveshaft, fuel tank (for the fuel pump) and cat pipes for an additional $200.

I was pretty pleased, especially with low mileage and the fact that it's an '01 (so has LS6 intake and no EGR). But I'll be even happier after the conversion is complete! (recipient is a '78 T/A black-and-gold, bandit-style).

Or you could save yourself a ton of money, and get a late model, low mileage, 6.0L 325HP LQ4 truck motor. Weights only 63lbs more than the LS1. They are a lot easier to find. Just a thought.

Are you sure you're not thinking 97-98 LS1 engines with the less desireable heads and other drawbacks? I have a 99 Z28 and I am almost sure it is a center-bolt setup rather than a perimeter-bolt setup. Ahh dam%it, now I have to go look!!

I payed exactly $3000 for my '00 LS1 and T56 complete except for an alternator. Motor had around 50k miles on it.

The guy also gave me a ton of other stuff from the wrecked car...gas tank, fuel lines, entire body harness, steering wheel with the entire column and the key for the ignition, exhaust system...

basically anything I'd need to swap the drivetrain into any type of car

Found it in the For Sale forum here

I paid $4000 for a ls1, t56, supposedly out of a '99 vette. I got a '99 block, LS6 intake, '01 trans am transmission (with LS6 clutch, etc,) stock AND mcleoud master cylinders, and no accessories (after reading "all" in auction.. ) I was pissed at first, until i realized that the rest of the accessories would only cost 50 bucks and I got a nice intake =). Getting a direct pullout from a stock car would be best, mine was a bit of a gamble.

So as far as LS1 engine goes, it seems like the 01-02 are the years to try and get? Currently have a guy offering his 00 LS1 for $2k, but if the 01-02 are that much better, I will hold out for one.
