T56 Shifter Relocation

T56 Shifter Relocation Has anyone worked on a T56 to move or relocate the Shifter forward. I am doing a 71' Chevelle with a LS1 and T56, trying to use the stock bench seat and it hits the front of the seat.
Trying to find info on the McLeod that state it will move forward 1" to 4". Anyone know about it ?
I understand that Keisler make a kit to move it to the forward plate. but it is a costly conversion.

If you can catch the latest pop hot rodding with the older gto on the cover. There is a half page write up on that shifter. I will be buying one for the lt1 swap im doing for a guy. Same problem you are expiercing (sp)

The socket was welded to 2'' sq. plate an bolted down with 4 # 10 screws

I developed a shifter relocation mod a few years back and have done quite a few boxes now. Unfortunately I don't do a kit, only complete boxes.
I mainly do them for Shelby Cobra replicas but I did one just recently for a 57 chev with the original bench seat. Hopefully I'll have some pics of that car soon once his engine is built.
Here's one of my boxes.

Thanks again for the info on the ball and socket setup.
I looked through our MSC cataolog and contacted our MSC rep, but the best he could come up with was spherical rod ends - similar to a tie rod end with the ball and socket, and then a longer end...

you wouldn't still happen to have the MSC part number for the ball and socket you used, would you???

I will try to find the part number. It might have came from master car, not MSC. It's been about five years ago. The parts are for gas shocks (like the ones that hold your trunk up.) The package says "steel 13mm ball socket for M8 Thread Fixed-Force Gas Spring Part # 9416K87" That is the female socket part. The male ball part says "ball stud for 13mm fitting 5/16"-18 male Part # 9512K83" I have a spare set that I will sell if you can't find them. Good luck.

I talked to the McLeod Tech. they have both a shifter to move the stick up to 4.1" and also a kit to utilize the forward cover.
Summitracing carries the Shifter for $296+ McLeod #82-320-29408 (i think?) and the forward location kit is # 82-1001, but not listed in Summit yet..
I was able to get part of the install manual on the Kit. You have to take apart the trans some.. enought to get the shifter rail out and replace one of the shifter parts with one that they supply (has a added a socket to the part). Must drill, pin and do some cutting (not sure what for yet)
I am trying to find out more about it and may give it a shot.
Anyone seen either of them ?

I never would of though of gas strut sockets - plenty of strength and precision for this application - very insightfull!
Hang onto your spares, I'll order these directly - they're only a couple of bucks apiece, and I'll get some spares for myself right away.
This setup is perfect for my wagon with a bench seat - I'll be moving it forward instead of backwards - a few dollars and an hour or so of fab work and you have the shifter re-located to any position that you want...

BTW... I gave up on all of those other solutions.. I ended up with a Viper T56 which has a more forward location (4-6" forward). It was a cheaper and far stronger option.
