Default T5?

SO I was going to swap a six speed t56 into my car but THREE un named butt holes both reneged on their agreed upon deals to buy their transmissions. Thats right I found three different transmissions and said yes I will buy them cash in hand for their asking price. Their response was great I will get back to you and make the arangements. DAYS go by and then I get well I worked a deal for some other stuff I wanted so your just out of luck.

My question is can I swap T5 from say a mustang or whatever into my 69 camaro? I mean the final drive is virtually the same so why pay the higher price for the T56. There are tons of T5s running around. Can I just buy a lakewood bell houseing and bolt the sucker up? Anyone done this? Just wondering?

Also Im only pushing like 430ftlbs of torque that isnt to much for the T5s is it?

I think you may have some problems pushing that much power to it. Check the V6 forums (camarov6.com is one), even we break them

An extra note I don't have a lot of experience with them myself, just thought I would point you in a helpful direction.

Not speaking from experience, just from ing a few hours a day, the T5 would not be the optimum transmission for your swap. Yes, it'd work, and probably work fine. It's been done. Problem is, it's only rated at 300ft-lb of torque, and 3rd gear is very weak. They're known to break behind any kind of decent power. You'd be much, much better off buying a T56 with a decent clutch, as it'll take a good deal of abuse, and have a better overdrive. I'd trade off the weight and price difference anyday for a little security. Do a search in this section, it's been discussed about a week ago, camaroholic feels quite strongly about the T5 vs T56 debate.
good luck, post pics of your ride!

I wouldnt do it unless you already had a T5 laying around, or picked on up for dirt cheap.

A T-5 is week, 3 rd gear but there's Mustangs running 10's with them, just don't bang the gears,

I had the same problem, renig on the T-56 sale, I think I can point you to one, I got one 15,000 miles a bunch of extras, Pro-5.0 extra clutch, PP, flywheel,

PM me if you want me to find the T-56 for sale!

There 'were' a couple high horsepower v6's over at fullthrottlev6.com, but notice i said 'were'... Guys have broken them stock. They may be okay for a couple hard runs, but like earlier said, dont bang on it too much...if at all...

the TKO is supposed to be an awesome tranny, doubt u will ever break it, but as far as cost, you are better off finding a T56

I have about 700 miles on a tremec 3550 with a 430 crank hp 302. Will be putting in an ls engine + t56 in 2 months. Open to sell one or the other or both. If interested anov@skylinc .net

Yeah believe the "500" and "600" after the TKO are the torque ratings. They're meant to be a good deal stronger than a stock T56. Keep looking! You'll find one.
2 cents..

Does anyone know if the T5 can bolt up with a lakewood bellhousing to a 350 or where there different versions of the transmission that bolt up differently or have a different input shaft? I guess my question is will it bolt up from a mustang?

Don't feel bad... I've run into the same thing trying to buy an R154 Supra turbo tranny to fit my swap, one of which was supposedly in the same area as me. Why bother posting stuff FS/responding to wanted posts if YOU CAN'T/DON'T WANT TO SELL???

The worst thing about trying to buy Supra parts is... immature other Supra owners!

Back on topic, I've looked at the TKO 500/600 and they look like they might fit my tunnel (T56 won't- too wide in the rear part ). What are the differences between the GM & Ford versions?

I'd recommend the tko if your going to put a t-5 in. my cousin has a built 5.0 that he went through 3 t-5's (stock ford) trannies before he put in the tko. after that he beat's on it even harder and it's still holding up after 30k miles.and quite frankly he drive's like a a hole.

The GM and Ford have different diameter bearing retainers. The snout on the bearing retainers is also different between the Ford and Gm versions. The length of the input shafts are also different.

While we're still on the T5/TKO subject, I had asked about the possible "fitment" with a LS-series bellhousing (Keisler) for the TKO in a fox body. There's already a Tremec crossmember made for a TKO. Does anybody know if the GM-style TKO (Keisler) would be the same physical size, so the trans would "line up" without major modification? Any insight would be apprecaited!

Thank you sir. This clears up a few issues. As it turns out, it looks like I can swap a Jeep input shaft onto a Toyota tranny & end up with just about what I need.

69rscamaro:
When I built up my LT4 Trans Am, I found a great deal on a rebuilt/improved "bulletproof" T56, around $1900 shipped, I'm thinking the shop/guy was in Illinois or Indiana. The first one he sent was damaged by FedEx, and he shipped a second one before getting the first one back. If I can find the guy's contact info, I'll PM it to you. This tranny has held up to a +/- 600HP motor OK, but I'm not hard on it or racing it.
