A friend directed me to Schoenfeld Headers, they can make you a set of flanges with 3" of tubing already welded up, available in 1 5/8" and 1 3/4" diameter according to the website. Most folks use 302 or 351w based long tubes and swap the flanges, but you seem to know that already. Search around the site, there are a few threads here and there.

A 96+ K-member bolts right into the car, and with modified 4.6L mounts works great with the LS1. If you want a stock 4.6L K-member, I have one sitting in the garage. $20 plus whatever it costs to ship.
