I searched and could not find the answer i am looking for. i would assume that the t56 will bolt up to the iron block vortec engines with an ls1 flywheel and clutch. correct? if not what do i have to do to get it to work? The blocks are essentially the same besides one being aluminum and one being iron right? Thanks for the help!

Yes, almost any of the LS1 based Vortec truck motors should bolt right up to an LS1 T56 setup (that'd be the 4.8, 5.3, 6.0, and the upcoming 6.2L). The older Vortec motors (5.0 & 5.7L) don't interchange (just to be clear since GM is calling pretty much any truck motor a Vortec motor).
I say almost, because some of the early LSx truck motors have a longer crankshaft (by like .400") than the LS1. Later truck motors use the LS1 style crankshaft and use a spacer for certain applications (like the 4L80E in 3/4 ton trucks).
And the 5.3L can be had in alum and iron versions, although I think the alum version is only available in Trailblazers and a few other limited applications (maybe the SSR?)
