Question Uber LS1 Newb Help

Hi, I"m in the middle of dropping an ls1/t56 into my 3rg gen RX-7 and it came time to put the starter on the motor but I can't get it to fit. I've replaced starters before and did the engine conversion so I"m not totaly dumb, just I can't get the starter to fit. I cna't get it to fit flush with the motor and go into the bell housing. Any tricks? I didnt have a starter to take off and see how it was mounted so i'm going in blind right now.
Help

Back again. Got the bolts from GM. Theres a long a short one. Like I stated earlier I didnt get to take the original off so didnt see how it came apart. I dont understand how the short bolt does anthing. It's to short to catch any threads. I know i'm just not seeing it laying on my back underneath the car. How's it go?

sheesh, if you look at the starter you can tell that the short bolt goes in board and the long goes outboard,
inboard= closest to oilpan
outboard= away from the oilpan

Have you ever changed a starter before??? it's really no different on any SBC/BBC

Yup, Short one on the inside, long one on the outside. Are you using the GM starter or an aftermarket unit? That could be different.

on a side note , it depends what Ls1 starter you use: if you use the F-body one , you will have two different length bolts, on a holden commodore or lumina/caprice ( overseas version ) the stater has two identical length bolts.
