Default Valve Cover Mods

Anyone ever cut/ground off the coil pack bosses, welded in the holes and polished the stock valve covers? I plan to remote mount my coil packs and I want to clean up the valve covers. I know there are aftermarket covers available, but I think this would be a clean look.

Also, the two breathers on the passenger side; are they necessary? And what is the 1" hole in the rear of the drivers side cover for? Oil return of some sort?

The hole in the back of the driver side is for PCV. If you are using an LS6 style PCV you can plug this one. At least one of the tubes on the passenger side connects a hose to the throttle body ahead of the throttle blade to let air into the crank case. I have the other one capped on mine.

Ya, I'm having them tig welded in. So we'll see how that goes. I'll post some pics when they're done.

So, do I need to keep one of the pass-side breathers functional?

I chose to do the LS6 PCV conversion because of reports I had heard about reduced oil consumption. It also gets rid of a lot of ugly hoses in the motor. I had the manifold off to change to the LS6 manifold so figured to do this at the same time. I followed the guide on LS1HowTo.com: http://www.ls1howto.com/index.php?article=18 You can just buy the later model valley cover and reuse your existing PCV valve and a piece of fuel hose.. That would be cheaper than the kit you mentioned. If you have an earlier block you will need to cut off a piece of a casting in the lifter valley. I used a die grinder with a cut off wheel and it came of pretty easy.

You need at least one of the vents on a valve cover to let air into the crank case, otherwise the vacuum has nothing to pull into the PCV. Some people use a breather cap on the oil fill. Using the vent on the valve cover into the valve body provides a sealed system though.
