Question New to the forum, couple of questions

I'm putting a (I think, based off my searches) 98 LS1/T56 into my 89 GTA. At the moment I have both motors on the ground and a very weight reduced Trans Am inbetween.

As I understand it, the old pcm gets tossed and you use parts of the old harness and the whole(?) LS1 engine harness and pcm. I get that this will run the motor, but how do you connect other pcm controlled items? I'm pretty sure the fans are pcm controlled, are the gauges??

I also have the 99+ plastic gas tank (already in the car ) and was wondering how to connect the 2 connectors (fuel pump/sender/gauge and evap controls) off that to the pcm (that is where they go, right??). I'd like to keep the evap sys if possible, it is there anyway and affect drivability at all as far as I know.

BTW the head #s was 853 and the pcm service # is 16238212. Are those heads good, bad (are there any bad LS1 heads?), same as any other??

Thanks for any help guys, guess it's time to stop the lurking

853 heads are fine. I'm pretty sure those are the ones i've got with the center bolt valve covers (better)... LS6 heads are better yet, but it's not a big difference. Gauges can be run off the PCM, but many times, other than tach and speedo, it's easier to use external gauges (i've got autometers with their special sending units) i've found. You'll have to have the PCM programmed by a sponsor (or pm me for a good deal), and they can help you choose what outputs you'll want, and where they go. Fans are PCM controlled, you are correct.
good luck

Correct

You have to individually reconnect the components you need/want. The fans are usually PCM controlled but you can control them without the PCM if you really wanted to. The gauges in your 89 are not PCM controlled.

Do you have the full harness from the LS1 car, if so there is a harness that goes from the main engine harness to the fuel tank. Otherwise you will have to make a harness. You probably will not be able to use the LS1 sender to actuate your fuel gauge since the scales of resistance are different, but all the rest of your gauges will work.

Did you read the 98 camaro word document I posted in the FAQ section? It is generic but it will get the engine running, being that you have a car that already had EFI, electronic speedo, electric fuel pump, overdrive you could make the connections a little more clean since you already have fuses/powersources for that stuff.
