Default SBF headers Converted to LS1

A while back, someone posted how they converted a set of SBF headers to fit an LS1.

I was able to confirm the flange dimensions, and found that the port center-to-center distance of the LS1 is only .020" greater than that of the SBF. In my book, that's close enough to make it a viable conversion. For example, a set of long tube Summit headers for a SBF is $89 for some applications. Add $32 worth of GMPP LS1 flanges and you get headers for $121 after a little cutting and welding. Minor adjustments would be possible if you welded some stubs to the flanges first.

Just thought I'd sare.

I am looking for headers for my Chevy II project so this is interesting. I hate to cut up a set of expensice LS1 headers that don't fit so this is much more appealing. I would like to hear if someone else has done this.

I'm pretty sure there is a thread on torquecentral where some RX7 guys have done this with their swaps.

I used MAC 351 windsor headers to make mine, but mine are in a mustang so I don't know about them fitting your chasis.

Damn brains.....i thought you also used the mac 351w fox swap headers on yours! so if both you and ls1stang both used a 4.6 k swap, which i think you both did if not by the same mfg, i wonder which of you had the most additional tube mods from pass to driver side???

if i remember correctly, ls1stang had little to NO fabrication on the pass side other than the head flange itself, and you brains had to only modify 1 tube on the drivers side.

Now, if this is correct, do either of you have the exact part #'s because i may look into buying a pair of each if i can get them cheap enough. however, i would like to have 1 3/4" primaries and that's what the Mac swap headers have. the less fab work there is at the $50/hr rate my guy charges me, the better!

any input from you guys?

Not to worry; I suspect mostly Mustang/Ford guys will benefit from this, as you could buy some year Mustang specific headers, tweek a little, weld some flanges, and you're done.

That's the biggest downfall of these headers -- the primary tube diameter. They'll work for my mild setup though.

One tube per side needed to be routed, very easy modification though. I'd like to see what the Hooker 351W headers fit like, but they're kinda expensive

i've got a guy i'm working out a transaction with for tires/rims who has some hooker super comp's he'll sell me cheap he said, but they're 1 3/4" shorties with 3" collectors that are setup kind of like a down pipe that hook up with the rest of the system. i'm going to do the long tube setup, but if anyone would like to try them, let me know and i'll hook you up with his # after talking to him about it.

also, he says that AJE now has an LS1/Fox k-member swap and that Stenod Racing does as well, and 1 other guy he knows. i'm going to be making some phone calls soon to get my ducks in a row and see what else they've got going!

That's what I'm using. I'm not really happy with the extremely close clearance between the oil pan and the k-member, it's something on the measure of 1/32". The steering rack hits it directly, but I think some offset rack bushings may fix it. It did put the shifter about 1" back from the stock location, but it will be easy to fix with some trimming. As far as headers I already have a set of o1 3/4" BBK 302 LT headers that I'm going to attempt to use. The passenger side so far almost looks like a direct flange swap will do it. The driver side will need what looks like tww tubes moved to clear the steering shaft. So far anyway

i used the MAC 351 swap headers. the passenger side was fine, the drivers side looks like it needs alot of help but i havent gotten too far with them.

i would go with a custom set next time. buy the time i paid for my headers (330), flanges (35), and bought tubing (60) to modify them i could have just had a set made by a local shop.

Here are mine. BBK 5.0 longtubes 1 3/4" part numer is bbk-1594.

I cut the flanges off, had the runners made circular at an exhaust shop. With just a bit of hammering and grinding they slip into the LS1 flange, tack welded for now.

Here are some pics. In the RX-7 2nd gen with t56.
