Default LS1 in a '99 S-10 wiring

i am putting an LS1 into a 99 S-10. my tranny will be a T56. aside from that there is nothing fancy. my question is this: I want my instruments (speedo, oil, temp, you know the basics and i don't have a tack) in the S-10 to work. do i have to get a custom wiring harness or can the wiring harness from painless work? i know that chevy is pretty modular on many things so honesty I just don't know about he wiring harness. your input and help is greatly wanted and I will be thankful for it.

Painless I am sure will tell you that there harness will work, but it will only work to make the engine run and drive. It will be up to you to make the gauges get the proper signals, as well as the ABS, A/C, Fuel Pump, Reverse Lights, and prbably some other stuff I am forgetting. You don't have to get a custom harness, but unless you understand wiring diagrams, and want to figure out what all you will have to keep, splice, and trick to make work, it is usually a good idea for a first timer to pick up one from a pro.

www.currentperformance.com

His name is Jared, He specializes in S-10 swaps. He built my harness and all of my factory guages are 100% functional. He can also set you up with computer programming to make everything work.

Hope that helps.

You can do it yourself or you can have somebody do it. It isn't rocket science. I did my own and everything works on mine too. It's a case of where you just have to understand how it works. It isn't as hard as you think. If you have some electrical experience it would be a piece of cake.

I am an electrical/computer engineer at benchmark electronics in angleton texas. so like you said it will be cool. basically what i really want to know is: is the painless wiring harness a stock replacement or something else. and will a stock LS1 wiring harness/brain function with the gauges without fandangling them to get it to work. kind of what to know what i am in for before i jump in the pool.

I don't think the Painless harness will do what you want. Its designed as a standalone type, and will be unlikely to support the gauges.

The S10 gauges for 99 use serial communications, there isn't a dedicated output for each gauge. I expect that there is some level of programming required to make them all work.

Visit CurrentPerformances' website and call Jarred afterward. He can answer your questions. He just did the harness and PCM reprogramming for my truck. Yes, it was fairly expensive (I spent as much on the harness / PCM as I did on the 6.0L truck motor), but its a brand new custom made harness for my application, a reprogrammed PCM (to my specs) and the reprogramming included a Predator handheld)

the painless harness is crap for a modern car EFI to LS1 swap... its great for a vintage car that needs JUST the LS1, but if you're going from one GM EFI car to this, your best route is to keep the stock harnesses and merge them.

I did this too every thing works well together and if you have your pcm calibrated on a chasis dyno the programmer can tweak all of your gages so they read right on.
