Default LS1 1968 cutlass, i hope

I've been reading about all the different style motor mount and pan clearence issues that every A-body swapper is having and i am looking for the easy way out. Is there a pan/mount combo that will be "bolt in?" What is the best wiring harness to use? Lastly, does anyone want to buy a 455 stroker with over $7700 in parts alone but only gets 5mpg? Thanks for your time, craig

got a P-Ayr LS1/4l80 on the way, so far i have searched this sight and found that i should send my harness to speartect and try spohn motor mounts. Is there a header that is made for an Abody Ls1 swap that doesn't need to be modded and can i get it in ceramic? Thanks for your time, craig

stock 99camaro oil pand will work, also stock manifolds or headers will work. adapter plate from performance parts will work. 68 cutlass is a real easy conversion. must use corvette brackets though.

I have a pontiac 455 in my 70 gto with about the same power.

you can get that thing dialed in to get around 11-12 mpg pretty easy, well a lot easier then swaping to an ls1.

on the highway I actually manage 16mpg in 5th gear (TKO 600 with .64OD) and that is with a holley 850 doubble pumper

Default What are you thinking?

Craig,

As a Olds guy myself, you need to re-think this one. I think you can fix your MPG problem a whole lot cheaper than swapping an LS1 in there. Your 455 sounds great already and should have awesome low end torque that will really move that boat around. And yes I've owned a 68 Cutlass (S Convertible).

http://72.22.90.30/phpBB2/viewtopic....727&highlight=

This is an example of a 455 68 w/ a 5-speed.

That would greatly help your MPG problem and preserve your low end.

Don't get me wrong, LS1s rule, I'm looking at buying one right now for a project swap (72 FJ40). If your 455 is mechanically sound the MPG problem could be fixed a bunch of other ways.

My $0.02, good luck.

Matt

PS Try not stomping on the gas all of the time. That might fix it too.

for engine dimension.. try this URL
http://www.paceperformance.com/index...=Custom&ID=586

Hooker makes A-Body Headers that are coated.. should work (?)

You should find a lot of info on swap for the A-Body that should work for your Olds

good luck, keep us posted.

Thanks for all the info, but i got my heart set on fuel injection, 20+mpg and cold A/C. I really like my 455 (actually its a 478) but i am getting kind of old (25) and i want to start taking this thing to florida and over the road. right now it is a sweet saturday night quarter mile car but the LS1 swap is already in the prossess. I appreciate all the imput and would like to know if anyone is still interested in my 455. it has to go, cheap! 218-387-1161 is my shop #

Autolodge,
I had a 454 in my 70 Nova that got 3 miles to the gallon. Traded it in for the ls1 www.geocities.com/marksls1nova
Now, I'm driving it to work every day, going to the drag strip on weekends and have no regrets. Yeah, it's three tenths slower in the quarter mile right now, but next spring, it'll three tenths faster than it ever was and still get close to 20 mpg. Dump the Big Block!!!

Whats the cheapest you would go on the motor and what kind of times did it run? Also I kinda think it's funny that you think your getting old at 25 I'm 23 and I feel far from getting or acting old lol

Even with having a custom intake mocked up. You could go MPI and put a 5 or 6 speed behind that 455 and map the FI system to run pretty efficiently, unless going WOT, and still be way cheaper than a swap. Up in 5th or 6th gear and staying off the gas would get you some pretty nice MPG figures.

Personally, I think taking old Iron and technology and bringing it up to the modern era is much cooler than just throwing an LS1 at an Oldsmobile.

Good Luck,

Matt

PS here's a prediction: LS1 in, much too low hp/torque to weight ratio = sold to a Olds guy who promptly rips the LS1 out (after opening the hood and barfing at the sight of a Chevy in an Olds), sells the LS1 here, and drops a 455 back in it.

lol, nice prediction. I really dont think you know what you're talking about. My '72 will get an LS1/4l60 in the near future. Comparing the aftermarket for the LSx based and 455s isnt much of a comparison and the costs involved in building a FI 455 (building it right) are pretty steep. I know, I've looked at both options. Also, if the car is sold who cares what the new owner would do.

to kill the ols bb vs ls1 arguement, consider this. i already have $7700 into the engine, thats without the Fuel injection and overdrive you guys think will work. My mind is made up, the LS1 swap has began. (started ordering parts and found a motor/tranny). I will have pictures of my stripped engine bay shortly. Has anyone done an Abody swap without taking off the front clip and just removing the inner fenders and hood? It worked well for the 350 rocket to 455 swap but that was a "bolt in" Thanks for your time. Craig.

I did my 71 Chevelle without taking the clip or inner fenders off.. just the hood. but I think it would have made things a lot easier if I had.
