Default Almost Ready To Fire the LS1 (Suggestions)

I'm almost ready to turn the key and attempt to start the LS1 in my 69 Camaro. The project has taken way too long and it's been over 5 years since the 10,000 mile engine has run. I removed the plugs and squired some Marval Mystery oil in the cylinders. I've installed all the fluids and the wiring is complete at least to my knowledge (Speartech reworked wiring harness and Painless 18 circuit for the car). I'm just waiting on one last part to finish off the inlet air tubing for the MAF and extend the wires for the new location.

My concern is the injectors having set for all this time. I read somewhere that you should attach a direct 12 volts to each one directly
and make sure you hear it "click". Anyone got any feedback on this situation?

I haven't put any fuel in the new aluminum gas tank with an inbourd fuel pump yet. I thought that would be the very last step to check out all the fuel lines to insure there are no leaks.

Should I turn the engine over several times with the fuel pump switch off to try and build up some oil pressure?

Anyway I would appreciate your comments and suggestions on this initial firing of an engine that has been idle for over 5 years. Thanks for your input in advance!

I pulled all the plugs which made the starter angry (windmilled). So pulled the starter and it worked fine.

Pulled four plugs and turned it over until the oil pressure built up.

Go figure.

I have run into problems with injectors that have been sitting a long time. On my 383 LT1 I built, when I first fired it up, 3 or 4 headder tubes were ice cold, slowly they started coming to life.

Same thing happened on a LS1 swap I did for a friend. It also being a returnless system, there was a lot of air in the fuel rail to bleed out.

good luck

You can also try hand cranking the motor a few times with a long wrench. Also when firing you can check for fuel pressure by pressing the pin in on the end of the fuel rail, if fuel squirts out then you have pressure.

On mine, I pulled all the injectors and sprayed them with Choke/FI cleaner to make sure none of them were sticking. I turned the key on to allow the fuel pump to build pressure and bled it at the rail like Rybar said. I did spin it a few times to make sure it was turning ok. Then I held my breath and cranked it over and it fired on the second crank and ran smooth. I had a ticking lifter for a while, but after about 10 minutes of run time it quieted right down. Mine was a 9,000 mile motor that had been sitting since early 2002 and it was April this year when I started it up so it sound slike we have similar situations. Good luck with it!

I let my engine sit for over a year and when I started it the injectors were a big problem. Half of them were sticking and the engine sounded like a briggs and stratton motor I tested them with a homemade rig basically tossing 60PSI im my air compressor and sliding a piece of fuel line over the injector and over the compressor blow gun. I pressurized the injectors while quickly tapping them with voltage from the battery. You have to have quick hands as you really dont want to pulse the injector for more than half a second. You should hear the injector clicking, and have a nice fan of air pulsing out. If you have any that seem odd or don't click either try cleaning them or get some ebay injectors.

To clean them, I soaked them in seafoam overnight and retested them. After that I still had one that was stuck so I bought a ebay set for $50 shipped. After the injectors went in the engine runs like new.

If I would have thought about it I would have probably pulled the entire rail as a unit with the injectors still in it and pressurized the rail. Would have made life easier, you can also pick up a injector pigtail for GM from the parts store for a few bucks to make life easier, or you could get your hands on a handheld injector pulser for about $75 they work great.

As for the other things to consider, just the common stuff have some buddies handy for extra eyes, make a list of every fluid the car takes and go check them, if you have a lasar non contact thermometer use it to check the headers and make sure they are all firing right, pressurize your fuel system check for leaks and blle the air out of the schrader valve. This takes a few times. other than that, good luck

If you fire the motor and find you still have injectors that aren't firing, feel the headers to see which injector isn't hitting and try tapping it with a screw driver, it sounds crude but it worked on my LT1. Good Luck

I think stock is 28 lbs - do a search in the engine tech section.
