Default ECM/Harness won't run, swap question

I'm having trouble getting my swap up and running. I have an unknown motor, I believe it to be a 99+ camaro motor. It does not have the LS6 throttle body and intake, so I'm guessing its a 99 motor. It has the center bolt valvecovers and it is throttle by cable. I have painless harness 60506 which is for a 1997-1999 gm ls1 fuel injection motor. My engine came with a computer which is part number 16239740, my harness manual says I need part number 16238212. My problem is that my motor will turn over and start, run for a second or two, then die. I have a cam in the motor, no smog equipment, no rear 02 sensors, etc. etc. Do you think I simply need to have my current comptuer reprogrammed before it will run? Or would it pay to purchase the computer painless says to use? I cannot find any information on the computer I have in there now. Is there a better way to identify what year motor is in my car? Thanks for any help you guys can provide. Thanks, Mike

ok first of all a harness can only be 97-98 and 99 -02 then 03-04 then 05-06for the ls2

if you have that round looking computer then thats a 98 computer if you have the flat computer then is 99+

how about a vats delete module or computer reprogramming ?
another one make sure is not a corvette computer because then it would need to be reflashed to a non tbw setup or convert it to a motorized tb

hopefully that helps

My painless manual definately says 1997-99 gm ls1 fuel injection on it. Since the manual calls for the 98 part number, i'd guess that its for the 98. The motor on the cover has the perimeter valvecover bolts.

This wiring harness came with the motor (it was an ebay purchase) as did a computer. It is part number 09386530hwd, 12200411 serv which i believe is the 2001-2002 computer.

I bought on ebay again, computer 16239740 which I was told is a replacement for the 16238212 that the harness calls for.

I guess we need to go back and ask, how can I identify my motor's year, and what are the differences between years.

I have AFR heads so the factory sticker is long gone.

UPDATE: I do have the ls6 intake, so my motor must be a 01 or 02, is that correct? Or someone put an intake on my motor, where are the casting numbers for the block?

ok well first make sure you dont have a 97-98 painless harness with a 99 and up computer as all the pinouts are different

one easy way to find out i think is the tach wire should be the 10 pinout on the red plug
if it is in the right spot then you do have a 99 and up harness as well and it should fire up pending you have no vats

If you have the the harness for the wrong computer it won't even run, the fuel pump won't turn on. it's definitely the VATs system. Have you sent your PCM in to disable the VATs?
