There's been several done with LT1"s using the Rennegade kit. Those conversions I have seen. They now offer an LS1 kit, which I have not seen. If you plan to adapt, then the transaxle gearing in a standard 944 is a little short. Most swap out for the 944T (Turbo 951) transaxle, as it has taller gearing more suitable for a V8 along with a strengtened main shaft and R&P. If you plan on doing some major surgery and welding, then you could swap and entire drive train and not worry about the transaxle, its' strength, or it's gear ratio's.

Hey guys I'm going to be putting either a LT1, LS1 or prefferably an LS4 in my 944. You will definitely need the 944 turbo transmission as the 944 NA tranny sucks!

Someone mentioned something about the 951 trans having better gearing- I disagree. The 951's 5th is WAY to low to get to top speed or conserve fuel. Alot of people get the 951 trans and put the 944NA 5th in there. The issue with the 944 transmissions though is that even the 951 will break with the high torque of a LS V8... One of the few reasons why I'd be happy with a stock LS4 with DOD- 300HP in a 2700lb car is pretty decent in my book!

you might want to think about the 968 transmission. it is already posi trac and has 6 speeds.

Not a good idea imo. I have heard of a lot of problems with the 968 trans. The bushings in it can beat out with just the 3.0 in front of it, nevermind an LS! Just stay with the cheaper and strong 951 trans (which also many times comes with lsd). If you wanted you could also put a torsen in it.

i have one im converting right now. mine is a 87 944 N/A. the problem with the six speed is that you spend more time shifting than your foot on the pedal. those trannys are meant to keep the car in a pre-designed power area, that the ls1s do not have.

they have pics of customer cars and completed cars all around.

My 944 is an 87 too.

Actually the 6 speed was almost entirely for bling factor. The 3.0L engine has a very flat torque curve and would be fine with a 5 speed. They put a 6 speed in it "because Porsche drivers like to shift".

I have done several 944/968 lsx conversions and did some of the R&D work for RH over the last several years. The 951 tranny is a good choice for the conversion, but they are not suited for drag racing and clutch dropping. I built a track olny 944T this summer with a drysump 383 and it has proved to be reliable and fast on road race tracks. I have a 968 with a 2002 ls1 that makes 400rwhp and I am using the 968 6 speed. I have had this gearbox behind a V8 944T and my current 968 for over 5 years with no issues. The 6 speed is a stronger gearbox due to the larger ring and pinion diameter and the G50 diff. Both gearboxes would benefit from a higher R&P ratio and that is currently in the works. Some 968 trans did have a pinion bearing issue from the factory(pinion bearings were shimmed to tight resulting in failure), but they are a better design trans. I am working on having a 3:22 to R&P built for the 968 trans which will make a perfect match for the LSX torque output. Good luck on your project!

Thanks for the info

Did you use a Renegade kit? or fab your own mounts etc?

Can you put the 968 trans in a 944?

Thanks

I built my own mounts and adapter plate, etc. I shared that with RH and they developed a kit for sale. 968 trans is a bolt in for the 944 but you need the 968 axles, shifter and shifter rod. You can see my car and my brothers on the RH website, the grey 968 and maroon 944T widebody track car.
