Default 80Z28- Looking for LH6/LS4 swap.

So, I'm considering jumping into the LSx game, and transplanting an LSx into my '80. The LH6 with DoD caught my eye, but I have concerns-

1. Will the F Body oilpan setup bolt onto the bottom of the LH6, with whatever happens to be down there for the DoD?
2. Does anyone know if the truck alt placement clears a 2nd gen hood? How about the LH6 intake?
3. Any idea on cam specs? I've read the cam has different lobes for the V4 cyls.
4. Anyone see any issues with an occasional blast down the strip? I.e. are the DoD lifters too heavy to run to the 5900rpm limit now and then?
5. Can I use an LS1/LS2 manual flywheel on back, since I'm already running a T56?
6. Can I assume that Speartech or someone has the E40 all figured out?

Is the LS4 front driver the same basic setup? Generically speaking, I know lots of front drive engines do weird things with intake routing that just wouldn't work in a rear drive app. Is that the case here, or could I get a transplant from a GXP or somesuch, too?

Lastly, one of the points of the exercise is to get improved fuel mileage. Why? Just 'cause. I don't drive the car enough for it to matter, so it's bragging rights, basically. I'm hitting 24mpg highway now with a carb'd 350 and the T56, but only 15-16 in town. I'd like to see 18/27 at least- might be a feat for this brick of a car. I'll probably keep emissions, too (cats, try to figure out returnless fuel, etc), also just 'cause.

Or, should I just dig up an LS1 and say F' it? The car needs to go mid 13s. Low ambitions, I know, but I'm getting too old, too lazy, too short of time, and too cheap to fix busted stuff that comes with 500hp engines.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Todd

Hi Todd....have I seen you at nastyZ? first off dropping an lsx motor into your car is a great idea. I believe the ls1 pan should swap onto the lh6......don't quote me on that though. I believe most of the dod stuff is up top.

if you ask me, I'd say go with the LS1/T56....its almost a drop in swap in 2nd gens and you get more power

Schitzo- yep, I'm from NastyZ.

I find the DoD interesting, and I'd like to get it set up in an old car. I've been running my T56 for 11.5 years now, but it's an LT1 piece. I'll have to convert the front cover and BH .

I also frequent NastyZ alot as dirtyscotty. I will be watchin closely and may be able to help as I am planning on doing the LSX swap this winter into my 80 Z28 also. I will probably have to go Auto though as I dont have a T56 yet and really cant afford one at this point.

Yes, we have the E40 pretty figured out.

Too much changes on the LS4 to try to use in a RWD application I think. Crankshaft length, water routing; it probably wouldn't be worth the effort especially since you have plenty of RWD choices. Not only the LH6 but I believe it's called the L33 that is all aluminum, 5.3 DOD, RWD, that was in the extended Envoys for 05.

Nothing wrong with being adventuresome. First you do a DOD swap, then everyone will want one! That's what drives the hobby.
