Default How does a 496 compare to a LS1

I guess what i am wondering more so about the 2 is how hard would it be to put a 496 8.1L in vs putting in a LS1 in a 70 chevelle or a 80 Camaro, both of which i have. Not sure if this is the right place to post this sorry if its not.

Thanks in advance,
Andy

I would guess that the vortec8.1L 496 would be easier to bolt in, but more difficult to wire up. I am not 100% sure but I believe that the motor mounts locations are the same as an old BBC so it should bolt right in. Looks like the accys should clear except for the A/C compressor. The only other thing might be the oil pan, the truck one might be too deep, and it may have changed dimensions from the old style pan if they went to a one piece rear main seal. The engine management system for the 8.1 is a mystery to me though. I know that there are programs to tune it, but I don`t know much about the harness. The LSx motors are swapped more frequently so it is easier to get wiring info on them. But you could get the diagrams from alldata. Check with speartech, he probably does harnesses for 8.1`s too.

would be almost identical work. problem with the 8.1 is that there is virtualy no aftermarket for them..

I think the 8.1L in the 70 chevelle would be way cooler. I dunno. the engine bay is so big it either needs a turbo'd small block or a big block in there Either way, where there's a will, there's a way. The 496 will get MUCH worse fuel economy, but I think it'd be worth it. Neighbor of mine has an injected (not ramjet) 502 and a TKO and it's awesome.

got pics of the chevelle?

If you are going big block, why not a crate 502? Price might be a bit more more initially, but seems like more plug and play stuff is available

Ive never seen a fast 502 they are truck engines for pulling trailers.

LS1 is only about 40 years of technology better.

Get an LS1 and have just as much power with half the cubes. and be able to drive past a gas station.

yeah.

this is my friend by it..

im with the guy above.. go with the LS1 and save a few hundred pounds and get the better technology. they love nitrous, and do pretty good with boost too if you want the big torque.

My vote is LSx technology and either a big single or some twins. A budget buildup with stock LS2 block, stock LS1 crank, Eagle rods, and forged Diamond pistons, with budget CNC ported 6.0 heads and a used LS6 intake/ported TB and used Z06 cam. Netting 1000rwhp with parts strong enuf to take the abuse for a modest cash outlay if you did the buildup yourself. You can use stock 5.3/6.0 truck manifolds for the turbo headers. That Chevelle would look awesome and has a humongous engine bay.

What do you consider fast. A friend has a 502 with a cam swap, Solid roller that runs low 11s in a ss pickup truck.

the 8.1 is a pretty bad motor...it pushed my buddys 2500 avalanche w/ 33's to a 15.9 with a catback and cai not bad for having the bed full of my ws6 wheels ....they do have head/cam packages and blowers for them, but i would go big cube lsx
