Well, you have a few options. A new crate motor will obviously be more expensive than a used motor. The Ls1 from 00-02 TransAms and Camaros ususually run between $3,000 and $5,000 used which usually includes the PCM, Trans, and wire harness. Now there is a second option. The LQ4 and LQ9 are alternatives to LS1 motors. These motors feature a cast iron block instead of aluminium used by LS1s. The weight difference is about 75 pounds from what I have heard. The LQ motors are actually 6.0 liters and have a little larger combustion chambers. The LQ4 has 9:1 compression ratio and is found in Chevy and GMC pickups, silvarodos, and Suvs. Where as the LQ9 has a 10:1 compression ratio because of flat top pistons, it also has stronger rods. The LQ9 is found in the Silvarado SS and some Avalanches and Cadilac escalades. The best way to tell is by pulling off the water pump and there shoud be a stamp on the block. These motors are usually a little cheeper and run between $1,200 and $3,000. The oil pan and intake can be swaped out for an LS1 style for hood and ground clearence. The cast iron block also tends to be better if you plan on running a turbo or something like that.
