Default LS1/ 4L60E trans crossmember for 1968 Camaro....

When putting an LS1 and 4L60E into a '68 Camaro, what type of crossmember and spacer is recommened for the 4L60E? Also, what are the procedures? I looked in the "basics" thread but all they talk about is the T-56. And the search function turned up nothing.

Thanks for any advice you can give.

tagging along. i'm about to drop a 4l60e in my 68. the 2 links below offer crossmembers for 700r4 in 1st gens. the 700r4 is basically a non-electronic 4l60e. what i don't understand is how 1 cross member works with all the various engine mounts that place the block in numerous locations.

most of the mounts you can use dont move the motor too far from stock (wich i have to presume this crossmember was designed for, a stock position sbc or bbc with a 700r4) they dont seem to be claiming anything about fitting applications with lsx or otherwise. plus most crossmembers have the hole for the trans mount elongated to accomadate some fudge room. so if the 700r4 and th400 mounts are in the same place (if anyone knows the specs for sure please chime in) then the 4l60e "should" bolt right in place of a th400. and if thats the case, then im just surprised that the mount for the 4l60e and the t56 is in the same exact location?

the turbo 400 crossmember SHOULD work. I cant say for sure, because mounts are different, But a friend of mine and I mocked one up and determined that with a T-56 it works with a 1" spacer. The difference in mounting location between the two trannies is small, I calculated it once, but I forget exactly. it was something like 1/2".

I have a 68 firebird LS1/4L60E. I used S&P style motor mounts and the turbo 400 trans crossmember. To make the crossmember work I just welded a mount on the other side of the tube, opposite of the original mount. The difference in mount location is only a few inches. I did it 2 years ago so I don't remember the exact difference.

I've done two autos by chopping the mount off a 400 crossmember, flipping it upside down, and welding it back on

looks like you have plenty of answers. Here is mine too. First if you can weld and work steel it wont be a problem. Second you could buy aftermarket pieces from BRP (Brewer Restoration and Performance) or any other supliers. Third any competent shop can do it for you.
On mine we used BRP but we altered it to get the transmission pan up. So we enlarged the transmision tunnel. Cut the ends off the new crossmember so it would fit between the frame rails. Then took the pieces we cut off and welded them back on at 90 degree angles. To give you an idea of what that looks like stick your arms straight out to either side of you like a cross and turn you palms so the face away from you (like stop signs). We then mocked up where we wanted it inside the frame. Drilled holes in the plate that we had welded on the frame , put nuts in the holes, welded nuts in place inside the holes in the plate. I can send pics by email if needed. Just pm me.

By the way this is the easy part of your (not really a swap is it?) re-engineering job.
good luck

You guys kill me. I can't wait to get me a 69 and put me an ls1 in it. It's on my must have list of dream cars.
I just can't seem to quit spending money on on my 4th gen.

And I hear the th400 crossmember works pretty easily with both trannys. Good luck. I'll keep looking for more cool **** to come!

You are saying a stock 4L60E is rated for 620ft/lbs?? Where did you get that ridiculous number from?? Guys regularly ruin 4L60E's with stock LS1's

because the converter multiplies torque and the stock converter multiplies it by about 1.9 so +300ft lbs of torque times 1.9 and you are very close to 620 so it better take it

I used comp engineering's dropped crossmember, it's .125 wall, instead of the .030 wall or whatever the turd was. sent it right back and bought the comp one for half the price.

Mine's not a Camaro, but I used the Comp Engineering unit as a starting point too. The transmission is not going anywhere!
