Default Hood Clearance

Anybody running an LQ9 or LQ4 in a 2nd gen Firebird. I would like to know how much hood clearenc there is because my engineer brother and I are trying to design an airbox which will make the shaker scoop functional. I plan to cut out the inserts on the back of the shaker, the side that faces the windshield. That way it will be like a cowel hood. The air box would probably have mount to the bottom of the shaker scoop and some how be fixed to the top of the engine, maybe the manifold. A hose would then come out of the air box and into the throttle body. I wan't to know the hood clearence so we can figure out the demensions that the air box should be.

Thanks

I also thought about making the scoop functional. The only way that would be an improvement would be to switch to a carb style manifold and mount the throttlebody and maf facing upward. If you you use a LS1 or LS6 manifold, the air would be making a 180 degree bend. Search for the suncoast ram air hoods for the Impala SS. Their airbox may give you some design ideas. I'd be interested in what you can come up with but I don't think it looks very promising.

We're thinking about having the scoop act as the air box. The filter eliment would be entirely enclosed with in the scoop. Air would come in through the back, pass through the filter, and exit through a hose preferably in the front and like you said, "180" into the throtle body. I guese it could also exit out the side and curve around to the front but we think that would be less efficient. The question of the hour however is hood clearence. We just don't know if there will be enough room to have a hose exit out of the front of this thing. I have no way of knowing becasue I don't have the motor yet, not do I have the fenders on the car. We're just starting to play around with the idea now that its winter and propane for the bullet heater doesn't go very far. Probably will just have to wait till I get the motor mounted and go from there. Cool idea though. PM me If you have any ideas or come across anything.

Exactly what I had planned on doing with my car. You'll have plenty of room to do as you envision. I need to make a way to mount the shaker to the LS1 right now so I can reinstall the T/A hood I have. I kinda miss it.

Dang, I thought I was the *originator* of that thought. Too many great minds, eh?
My thought was to use the shaker as an air inlet. I thought that a 73-76 (in my case) scoop could be attached to a plenum that a cone filter could be attached to. The plenum would be routed around to the front ala SLP SS Camaro style. If you really wanna get tricky, you could install a functional shaker solenoid setup to have the door closed when the car's not running.
Any of you guys got a measurement on the LQx truck manifold height vs. a carb'd LQx? Mulling many ideas around...

I was also going to use the shaker as an air inlet but was instead going to use a recatangular flat style air filter as it would be much easier with the room involved. A functional solenoid would be uber-cool.
