Talking Finally fired up the AC Cobra

Hi All,

I finally got the LS1 running in my AC Cobra replica. I drove it out of the workshop under its own power. It was a good feeling to finally have it running.

It's got the quiet under body exhaust on it at the moment to get through registration. I'll bolt the headers and side pipes on later.

I've just got the bodywork and paint to finish off and a bit of interior trimming. I'm building the car in a race replica style with the bare minimum of creature comforts. No windscreen or wipers or heater, just an aero screen to keep the wind out of your face. The car should weigh in under 1000KG (abour 2200 pounds)

Currently running an internally stock motor with a MAFless tune. I'm working on an eaton M112 blower setup for later on along with a set of ported LQ9 heads and a cam.

Here's a video of firing it up.

Cobra Start Up Video

Cheers

Michael

Sweet !

How much will this project end up costing you ?

How much do you have in it now ?

I always wanted to build one.

I've reckon got about AU$40K (probably more) in it at the moment and it will end up owing me closer to AU$60K when it's finished and on the road.

Don't tell my wife.

The exchange rate for AU to US is about AU$1.25 = US$1.00

Cheers

Look again, the steering wheel is on the Right Side

I've got a couple of pics of the blower in the rough position it'll be. I've got a lot of machining to do to get it fitted. The blower is from a Ford Lightning pickup. I plan on machining the mounting flanges off the bottom of it and drilling and tapping into the edges and then bolting it on from the underside of the top plate on the manifold. The drive will be 8 rib and I have an 8 rib power bond balancer. I'll swap back to a conventional water pump and drive it off the back of the belt.

The alternator will run off the 4 rib accessory belt behind along with a power steering pump. That's why I've set the alternator back and made an extended pulley. I'll machine up a 4 rib pulley for it that will line up with the rear accessory crank pulley. I'll machine a power steering pulley to match and hopefully there will be enough clearance to mount the pump in the conventional position.

this pic should give you a bit of an idea what it'll look like.

Cheers

Yes that blower looks really familiar (I used mto own a Lightning)

Those make a lot of heat(Ford puts an intercooler below them in the Lightning trucks)

Although it's a decent desing I wouldnt use one on a GM motor. The money and time spent on making this one work would be better spent on the right supercharger.

Michael,

Is there an intercooler core inside that intake? Pics?

No intercooler unfortunately. I'm planning to make one and sandwich it between the blower and the manifold. It'll probably be about 1" high.

I was also thinking about running water/methanol injection. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find a definite answer if injecting water/methanol through the blower will damage it.

I've got some pics of the manifold somewhere. If I can't find them I'll snap a few on the week end.

Cheers

I believe this is the company that made the manifold: http://www.forcedairtech.com.au/genkit.htm

If you spent that much money for the manifold/plate, why use such a crappy supercharger?

You can definitely run the meth/water through the blower. Doing so will give you a great reduction in air inlet temperatires and the distribution will be fantastic.

You wont damage it, alot of the 03/04 cobra guys run the Snow performance methanol injection kit. If you have any questions about it, just pm me.

I picked up the manifold for the right price but I've been thinking for a while that I might sell the M112 and pick up a Whipple or an Opcon screw blower. They are fairly pricey down here though. I'm going to be in the US in February so I might have to try and find one when I'm there.

If water injection is OK I may forget the intercooler and just run the water injection. From what I've heard it's way more effective than intercooling. It'll also keep my engine bay nice and simple.

Cheers

Michael,

That looks great! I'm building an LS2 cobra here in the states - where did you get your headers from? They look like 4 into 4's? I'm looking at making up a set myself, but if an Australian company makes them, I'd take the easy way out and try to import a set.

Thanks, Carl

There's nothing available off the shelf down here. Anything built by a exhaust shop costs a small fortune so I built my own headers and side pipes from scratch.

Headers are 1 7/8" into 3 1/2" collectors. I made them from individual mandrel bends and TIG welded them together.

The side pipes are re-packable and have cat converters inside them. They sound really good but aren't so loud they deafen you. Open road cruising at 60MPH in 6th gear and you cant even hear them. Stand on it and they bark nicely. I've built a few sets for friends but there's a lot of work in them and unfortunately I haven't got much spare time lately.

Cheers

I cut up some pressed steel Corvette manifolds to make the under body system that's on it at the moment. Much easier than building another set of headers and it'll probably just be on to get through enginnering and rego.
