i don't know either. i installed all six phantom ll gauges without a problem

It's honestly installer preference. Nothing wrong with doing it on the bypass block on the oil pan, nothing wrong with doing it where the factory sending unit is also. You could have the argument that the factory location is up more out of the way from the possibly where the exhaust might run, but most installations that won't be a problem. It really just depends how you want to do it.

Default Easiest Way

I used an adapter part # ATM-2268 that worked great. Since I'm keeping my console guages, I bought a tee for my mechanical and electrical guages, part # NOS-16775NOS. Here's a picture of a VDO and Autometer behind the Vortec Manifold with the adapter, I just happened to have both senders from a different project and either one will fit.

Raising this from the dead so if someone else is looking for ONE MORE option. I removed the OE sending unit, broke the plastic top off of it, drilled and tapped the center of it with the 1/8" pipe thread tap, VOILA... my home made adapter. I used my factory oil gauge for my Chevelle so I just got the adapter and line kit from auto-meter and reconnected it.
