Default Hunting/camping rig.

Anyone have some fun/interesting suggestions for an off-roading/camping/hunting rig that would also enjoy a LS1 conversion?

My Dad is looking... He'd like something big enough for the family, something he can work on and has an aftermarket available, and something that'll be reliable and tough as nails.

I see tons of ads on Craigslist for Suburbans and Broncos and the like without engines and trannies, for under 2k... So cheapness wins this contest!

I was thinking some of the Land Rovers are cool too. Isuzu Troopers, Monteros...

Any suggestions appreciated! Post pics of the vehicles also if you have the chance!

Some of these vans are VERY nice. Gotta wonder how they'd look with a cargo rack on top, some foglights, big off-road tires... Like one of those Quigley vans. Just cheaper.

Check out the one in my sig. It's a '81 K5 Blazer with 6" lift and 38's. It's had a little body mod and plenty of space to load people on.

Oh you are looking for something a little more dual purpose. I don't think this one gets along w/ the DOT.

I have a friend big into Land Rovers and they are great offroad vehicles, just parts can get pricey. Some nice rigs on here: http://www.rovertym.com/

The ring gear size on Range Rovers/Land Rovers is wimpy and their electrical systems are an absolute nightmare. Stay far away from them.

I would look into Toyota LandCruiser FJ60 (wagon body but very rust prone) if he likes old school style trucks or a newer FJ80 (power everything and not rust prone). They both have very strong factory differentials, are recognized as some of the best wheelers out there, and can carry tons of gear/people.

I have a '96 FJ80 and the ring gear out back 9.5" I believe, comes with factory front/rear selectable electronic lockers ('93-97 models), coil spring suspension (rides great), can swallow 37" tires and tons of aftermarket support (lifts/bumpers etc).

An LS1 in a '93-97 LandCruiser would be pretty bad ***.

Here are some modded 80 series LandCruisers:

Cool built rig with turbo 4.5i straight Toyota 6 cyl (imagine a 6.0 turbo LSx):

To Alaska and back to AZ on a trip:

I put a 5.3 in my International Scout II and I like it. I am swaping in a 6.0L now!

But I would look for a mid 80's or early 90's suburban. Would be an easy swap! And give driveability, room, and tons for aftermarket support!

I really like those Toyotas, I'll have to look into pricing for them. My Dad is looking for cheap.

Maybe after my daughter is born I'll be able to afford one myself, I lean more towards the Suburban and Excursion. 10k isn't all that bad for a V10 Excursion! (I prefer the diesel though...) I want something huge to take the family places in comfort. My Dad is more the Toyota/Ranger fan, with a camper on the back. He goes Airstream, I go tent city/SUV.

Those Toyotas are awesome though, especially with such a large aftermarket.

Quick Reply: Hunting/camping rig.
