If it was mine, I'd stretch the wheelbase and do a longitudinal engine with a G50 transaxle, like Norwood does his 288 GTO clones. The 288 and 308 are the same from the doors forward, and really only need new quarter panels and a new rear subframe to accomplish the stretch.
I suggest you try to contact Bob Norwood for some pointers. His number is 972-722-2813.

1. I'm the anti-Christ for doing something this blasphemous and deserved to be boiled in oil.
2. Sounds great - take a lot of pictures so I can do it too!
I am, of course, documenting my travails so that others can do this. A friend wants to do this to another MB model than mine but I'll have worked out the major kinks, then we're planning on selling a kit, parts, or an instruction manual.
Good luck on your journey and take lots of pictures for the folks back home. Stay away from the big oil pot!!

Thanks everyone, we got so busy this year that this car is back to sitting in my showroom area. We have an LS6 engine from a 2002 Z06 to install in it, and I'm thinking of using a built 4L65 transmission. We just shipped out this week the old engine that we took out of this Ferrari, we sold it for $5,000 shipped.
The Ferrari forums got a hold of my website and what we're doing with this car. Of course they think it is blasphemy... They're saying the engine is the heart and soul of a Ferrari. Maybe, but the 308 engine is a weak 205hp '80's engine that can't get out of it's own way! I really don't want to put an automatic in the car, but it will be the easiest way that I see to do it. Bob

btw, I imagine you meant the 4T65, a typo but just to clear that up. Correct?
You said you hate the idea of making it an auto, ever thought of doing a Porsche transaxle or the original Ferrari transaxle? Just a thought, I personally don't know much about either of them. I just remember a buddy doing a kit car with a rear engine and he used a land rover v8 and a Porsche transaxle.
