Default Considering an RX-7 build, quick question.

I'm 6'4" and about 230lbs. Will I even fit in a second or third gen RX-7? I know it would make an awesome road course car, and it would give me an excuse to pull the LS1 out of the Z28 and drop something alot bigger in it. I've ridden in one years ago, but don't really remember how well I fit.

3rd gen, you won't fit well in; 2nd gen will be fine. I'm 6'1 and 230 and have plenty of room.

6'3" 200, smaller steering wheel, took foam out of the seat to fit in my Fd with my helmet on. A little tight, but not too uncomfortable to drive 3-4 hours. It's also my daily driver to work (15 minutes). Find one for sale, and take a test drive.

I'm 6'2" and fit fine in an FD with no sunroof. The sunroof takes away an inch or so of headroom

I seem to remember reading about some guy that was 6' 5-6"s fitting in an FD. As I recall it was a non-sunroof car and he had an aftermarket race seat mounted directly to the floor which gave him room for a helmet. You should definitely find an FD and FC to sit in before you make a decision though.

Yup. It's also pretty funny seeing looks from people that are surprised my frame actually fits in such a dinky car like my FC.

How are these cars on a road course? Is there a big difference in handling or weight between the two?

For road racing, the FD is most certainly superior. That's not to say that with the money you save up front on an FC you can't make it handle just as good. You can get a very nice, clean FC shell for under $1000. Even a piece of **** FD shell will set you back 4-5K, maybe more.

The 3-4K you save up front can buy a lot of go fast goodies.

Like Andrew said, stock vs. stock the FD handles better, although the FC is lighter in most trim packages. The FC can certainly be made to handle a road course VERY capably with a pretty small investment, relatively speaking.

mines not the best but if someone handed me some cash i'd probably let her go to fund the t/a instead of having two projects going at the same time.

I tracked my LS1 FD 4 times in the year I owned it.

Its a very faith based car

Without a lot of tire under it and the shortwheel base it will do what you want it to do but a lot of times you don't think your going to make it. Its tough to explain but if you start really thinking about the next corner you'll go slower.

The car car do a lot more than it feels it can do and there seems to be this transition where it feels like its going to let go before it digs in.

Best part were the brakes. I had Hawk Black's for track days, dirt cheap compared to C5 race pads and you could jam on the brakes at 140 with a just a single hand on the wheel and it would stop straight and hard.

I wish I could get brakes like that for the C5.

The C5 is far more forgiving to drive with overall a better feeling of grip and a much larger sense of when its going to break loose but the FD corrected much easier than the C5. I had far more fun on the street with the FD than the C5 because it was so easy to correct.

Back to back I prefer to drive the C5 on the track minus the brake issue....now if someone gave me an FD and told me they'd replace it for free if I wrecked it, then I'd take the FD over the C5.

I'm going to get another one one day...thats why I check this forum a lot. I had a triple black R1 and without AC it was not a good DD but I do miss it. Now I'm just in a position to have both the FD and the C5 so the FD will be more of a dedicated track car in the near future.

Well, it will be two years before I am even back in country. I am more in the research phase and finding an excuse to pull the engine from the Camaro to make room for a bigger one. But post some pics if you want. If you're not in a hurry to sell it, I will be in the market in a couple years.

Just about anywhere! Look in your local classifieds, Craigslist, eBay. There are a lot of RX7s sitting around with blown engines.
