Default Lincoln LS...

Hey all,

I just found a killer deal on a 2002 Lincoln LS... And I'm curious. I need a four-door family car with a child on the way, but also something that I can "play" with when my fiance gets her new Honda next year. It's a 5-speed manual with the V8.

So I want aftermarket support... I want something I can slide a bigger engine into, something I can do some good suspension/wheel work on, turn into a good car for carving corners and running solidly in the 12s. Does the LS have that type of support? I can't see the engine sticking around as I don't know much about it, but there are plenty of other engine choices out there, both in the Ford family and outside (*cough* LS2...).

I'm trying to register over on the Lincoln LS owner's site, but it keeps kicking me back for some reason... Thought someone here might have some good advice. I'd hate to buy a car that has no options as far as suspension pieces... But I think with a nice TT LS1 under that hood, some minor lightening, and possibly a six-speed manual... Well, we'll see. Anyone know anything about these cars, their aftermarket, and how modifiable they are? How huge a project this might be?

I know one ran in One Lap of America, I'm hunting down information about that as we speak...

My other choice is a Crown Vic/Grand Marquis/Town Car...

Thanks!

The one lap car last year, or the year before, along with a Crown vic were both cars that were done by ford, or ford racing, or another organization of ford employees, if this helps your search.

I believe it had a 4.6 motor, (possibly terminator?)

Dude, a terminator swap with a six speed would be stellar! As would an LSx, but I would think that would be the harder way to do it. Man, put some quiet exhaust (with cutouts of course) and a Rotrex (for lack of blower whine) on that sucker and you have yourself a hella sleeper!

The '03/'04 Cobra motor was definitely the first thought - I started overthinking myself as far as the weight of the engine, and the price of the engine, being a little prohibitive.

Gotta agree, though. Easy as all goes to pump up to 500+HP. Mmm... I think I might get the car... I'd like a better look at the engine bay, make sure it will FIT. It is actually an automatic car, too... I thought it was a five speed.

As far as I know you could only get a lincoln ls 5spd with a v6..

I had a 2000 ls with a auto and v8.. good car plenty fast.. 142mph top speed.. been there plenty of times.. only thing sucked it would start of in second gear then down shift to 1st a couple seconds latter...

Just like the guy said above.. If you got the 5 Speed manual it's not a V8.

Correct... And above that guy, I corrected myself, saying it was an automatic. *grins*

But thanks for the input!

I'm trying to track down some engine bay specifications or owners, see what I might be tackling here if I wanted to swap in a LS1 or Terminator engine with a T56.

It might not be that tough but I would only do it if you were bored and wanted a project. I mean you would end up with a car that doesn't really do anything much better for a lot of work. I mean the lincoln LS is an alright car, but nothing really that great honestly.

I believe the LS is based on the same platform as the Jag S-Type and the Jag has some aftermarket support in the UK, Arden is one of them. The suspension components and exhaust from Arden should bolt up. Obviously a Cobra drivetrain would be cool but way too expensive. LSx/T56 would be way cooler but your on your own as far as fabrication and wiring etc. Maybe the LS1 Fox body guys could help here. Good Luck!

Although the initial price of the 03-04 cobra motor is expensive... If you consider how cheap it is after you have the engine to make 500rwhp compared to the initial price of the ls1+cam heads intake and youre almost in the same ballpark but still with less power than the cobra motor...

Other things to consider... Availability is muchhhhhh better for the ls1 since the 5.3, 5.7, and 6.0 parts pretty much all interchange, andddd the 6sp, if you would get one, is slightly stronger than the cobras.. and... if you got an auto (4l60e), it would be better than that ford piece of **** auto you would have in it....

edit-... one more thing.. stock cobra clutch is much better than stock ls1..

"Based" is a very loose term in this case. They changed just about every part from the LS (DEW98) to the S-type. As stated above, the 4.6 fits pretty well. A Google search should yield a bunch of info on the Ford guys who ran One Lap a couple of years ago.

They had a huge, huge problem keeping the motor from overheating, and they were engineers. Hm.
