Kennedy Engineering Products makes an adapter for the 016 in the Audi 5000. You will have to do a little research to see if this will fit the transmission in the A4. You will probably have to stay stock on the power level to help the tranny survive. I don't know anything about the electronics integration in the A4.

Is your A4 a 5 speed (012) or 6 speed(01E)? Actually it doesn't matter, as both share the same bolt pattern. The crankcase on the LSx motors is too wide to allow the starter to fit both the starter pocket (on the trans) and the ring gear of the size required for the Audi. Kennedy doesn't make an adapter for this combination; at least not recently. In fact a GEN I SBC is a real tight fit for the starter on the early 016 trasaxle (Audi 100, 200, 5000, etc), but it does fit.
I am adapting an LS1 to an 01E 6 speed for a mid-engine application, and everything is custom made in order to couple the two together.
